 1. Hi Scott, what’s your favorite cocktail? I’ll have the cabana boys whip one up for you while I ask some really intrusive…er, I mean informative questions.
That’s hard to say. I’m partial to vodka and tonic, but occasionally I like spiced rum and ginger ale. Have the boys make one of each. Light on the ice.

2. Will do! What is your favorite swimwear? Are you a Speedo guy?
I’ve never felt comfortable in a Speedo. I like best the kind of trunks that come about half-way down the thigh. I know that, as a dad, I should wear knee-length trunks, but I find they slow me down in the water too much.

3. I’ll just pretend you’re wearing a Speedo then! Are you a sun-worshipper? Do you tan, burn, or do you prefer a fake bake or none at all?
Definitely not a sun worshipper. As a descendant of people from northern climes and one born and bred in the wilderness of Manitoba, I have sun-averse skin. I burn like crazy. While I do like to lie on a beach to write (what’s taking so long with those drinks? Interviewing is thirsty work), I need lots of sunscreen, a hat, an umbrella or a tree for shade and lots of hydration. Finlandia is my favorite brand of hydration, by the way.

4. Finlandia, huh? I’ll check it out! What’s your favorite beach in all the world?
Umm… that’s a tall order. I haven’t been to all of them, yet. I guess one that’s warm, has no other people on it but still has an unlimited supply of Finlandia, tonic and ice. Do you know where that is?

5. Is that a trick question? The answer is somewhere in Hawaii! Now, imagine you’re stuck on a deserted island after a three hour tour that goes awry. Name six people alive or dead that you’d like to be marooned with…and your fantasy castaway meal.
Well, dead people would start to smell bad after a while. So I’ll take six living people.
1: my wife, Roxanne, of course.
2: Nigella Lawson – easy on the eyes, and it would be good to have a second person along who can cook.
3. Bruce Springsteen, with guitar, for tunes.
4. Chuck Pahlaniuk to talk about writing.
5. Toby Neal to talk about writing, too, and also another fair-skinned person who obviously has figured out how to live on a tropical island. Of course, she’ll probably be mad that I marooned her on this island with me.
6.  Someone who knows how to distill vodka from whatever grows on this island.

As for the meal: fresh-caught fish roasted over an open fire, with local veggies and spices, and a flinty chablis. For dessert, local fruit with dark chocolate and black coffee.

Ah, here are the drinks. To literature!

Great answers Scott. I want to be marooned with you! And now for that excerpt and some links!

Torn Roots: Excerpt

The Activist

Rowan paused her tirade to let the members behind her take up a chant. “Maui shores for Maui! We don’t want offshore cash. Maui shores for Maui! We don’t need offshore land-grabs.”

A good crowd had gathered. In addition to the stymied construction crew, there were cops, a few locals, the corporate owners, of course, and media. Local TV, newspapers, radio station. Good work, Rowan, she thought.

Her eyes scanned back and forth, and then she spotted someone who made her heart stop for a second. What the hell was Sam Boyko doing at her protest? But there he was: long and lanky, curly dark hair, wide shoulders… “Crap,” she muttered. Sam was the last person she wanted to think about today.

A siren wailed once and two police SUVs drove onto the sight, lights flashing as they threaded their way between the cars and construction vehicles. Four uniformed officers, two men and two women, climbed out. Excellent, Rowan thought. This will ensure we get into the press.

One cop stepped between Rowan and the onlookers. “This is an unlicensed, illegal protest,” he announced. “I’ll give you all two minutes to clear off this property, and then I’ll arrest anyone who’s on this construction site without authorization.”

The Asian man in the gray suit stepped up to Rowan, offering a business card. “Ms. Fields, Enterprise Shore LLC understands your group’s concern. I assure you, we have done a thorough environmental assessment and our construction plans and methods will have the least possible impact on the fragile ecosystems of the shoreline as well as the forest.” He spoke flawless, carefully learned English.

Rowan swept the business card out of the man’s hand and threw it on the ground, her hair swirling around her shoulders the way she had hoped it would. “I’ve read all Enterprise Shore’s propaganda. None of us has time for your corporation’s lies, and neither does the environment.”

Then the construction manager, that creep, Tyler Lopes stepped forward and picked the business card off the ground. “Come on, Rowan, nobody’s hurting the environment here. Take Mr. Liu’s card. We’ll give you all the grand tour of the marina, the housing project, everything.” When Rowan did not take the card, he stepped closer. Rowan wanted to hit him, but she held herself still in front of the TV cameras. She couldn’t believe her eyes when Tyler slipped the card into her shirt pocket, fingers almost brushing her breast.

“I told you to stay away from me, Lopes,” she growled.

About Torn Roots

By Scott Bury

Hawaii is known for volcanoes and sandy beaches. Beauty and danger reign.

After breaking a case of murdered poachers in Maui’s national park, Detective Pono Kaihale accepts a short-term position as Acting Lieutenant in Hana on the island’s rain-forest coast. He is looking forward to redirecting lost hikers and moderating mild lovers’ spats, and enjoying the natural beauty of the southeast shore. But by his second week on the job, Pono finds trouble here comes in unexpected forms.

As environmentalists, property developers, protesters, arsonists, kidnappers and a rogue Homeland Security agent converge on his new post, Pono feels like the eye of a brewing storm. And when a new FBI agent gets involved, Pono realizes the stakes are much higher than a quiet period in his career.

Lives will be lost if he doesn’t solve this mystery quickly.
