Helping Jane Doe
Current mood: contemplative

Some years ago my Australian cousin’s husband was having a bad day at work. He left his office at lunchtime and was last seen going into the corner sandwich store to buy his usual sack lunch.
Coworkers saw him walking along the street looking sad…that was his last known sighting.
He was never seen again.
For years, his disappearance was a painful mystery and the police – who were wonderful – did everything they could. They even posed store dummies in local shop windows wearing the same uniform he wore for work.
Nothing.
His badly decomposed body was found two years ago when fire fighters fought to douse a blaze in the burning bush outside of Sydney. He’d been dead so long they were never able to tell what killed him or how long he’d been in the deep heart of the bush before he passed.
For my cousin, it was closure. When I went home early last year, I went to visit the place where he died and I was filled with desolation. I wondered if he willingly came to such an isolated place.
I wondered whether he starved to death, died of exposure…or if he was murdered.
We will simply never know.
I wonder if we would have had better luck tracking him sooner if social network sites existed then.
This week, Wisconsin police created a Jane Doe page on Facebook to help identify the female victim of a homicide.
Somebody must know her. Somebody must have loved Jane Doe. I would love to know her story and would love to help. I hope reaching out to the void that is the Internet brings a fast conclusion to a horrific case.
Here is her Facebook page:
