Beyond the city walls, the calm waters of the Propontis slowly turned from golden to black.<\/p>\n<p><em>This wine is so good. Mauricius must have brought it in from Crete or somewhere like that<\/em>, Javor thought.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, Javor, I missed you very much,\u201d Calanthe said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou did?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She squirmed around a little to kiss him on the cheek. \u201cYes, of course, I missed my husband. Especially in the last days before Andrina\u2019s birth. And when the first pains came, there was no one I wanted with me more than you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDid you not want the midwife? Or your mother?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calanthe laughed a little. \u201cYes, of course. And they were with me. But I still wanted you with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I could not have been with you when the baby was born. That is what your father explained to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell, no,\u201d Calanthe admitted. She rolled over so that she was looking down on Javor lying on the couch. \u201cBut after all, my condition was your fault.\u201d She smiled and kissed him on the lips. Javor tried to pull her body against him, but she giggled and rolled away to pick up her own cup of wine. \u201cWhere were you, Javor? You were gone for weeks. Did you have to be so long? To miss the birth of your first child?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Javor looked toward the Propontis again. The sun had set, leaving only fading blue and purple glows above the horizon. <em>Another hot day tomorrow<\/em>, he thought. He sighed. \u201cI swore not to tell anyone about my mission,\u201d Javor answered. \u201cAll that I can tell you is that it was for the Church and the Empire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Church and the Empire? Is there even a difference?\u201d She cuddled up against him again, squirming to find a comfortable position lying against him.<\/p>\n<p>He did not know how to answer that, so he looked at the sky. The first stars began to glimmer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJavor?\u201d she asked after finishing her cup of wine. \u201cWill you have to go away again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Taking care that his wife would not notice, Javor touched his amulet through his tunic. It was still, quiet. No danger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNot for now,\u201d he answered. \u201cThere is nothing happening now that requires my &#8230; skills.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich skills are those?\u201d she asked, snuggling more.<\/p>\n<p>He leaned forward and kissed her hair. He inhaled her scent, sweet and spicy at the same time. He kissed her cheek, and when she turned to him, her mouth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAhem,\u201d he heard.<\/p>\n<p>Javor looked up to see Gaetan standing near the steps that led down to the courtyard. He held a jug in one hand. \u201cWill my lord require more wine?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Calanthe gasped and sat up quickly, her hand in front of her chest, even though she wore a gown that covered her from her neck to her ankles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust leave the jug on the table,\u201d Javor growled. \u201cThen leave us alone, Gaetan.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The senior servant bowed just a little and put the jug on the little table beside Javor. He bowed again and walked off the rooftop.<\/p>\n<p><em>Is he mocking me?<\/em> Javor wondered.<\/p>\n<p>Javor refilled his wife\u2019s cup with wine. When she had drunk, he leaned in for another kiss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJavor, not here,\u201d she protested.<\/p>\n<p>He leaned closer and kissed her deeply. He pulled her closer, feeling her resist, then relax against him. \u201cOh, Javor,\u201d she sighed.<\/p>\n<p>He kissed her neck, pulling at her gown. \u201cNo, Javor, not here,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhy not? It is too hot in the bedroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are outside, Javor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one can see us,\u201d he answered, kissing her throat, then moving lower. \u201cBesides, anyone else on their rooftop now is doing the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>About this book<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>The Children of the Seventh Son<\/em> is the second novel in the Dark Age series, which began with <em>The Bones of the Earth<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The year 600 of the Christian Era is the darkest time of the Dark Age.
