t’s tough being a vampire. For one thing, there’s so much time on your hands. And for another, being undead for centuries means that you meet way too many stupid people…

Socrates Delis, since he has to be awake at night, wonders why he shouldn’t make better use of his time. So to ease his loneliness and hopefully meet a more educated group of people, he enrolls in night school at UCLA’s extension courses and quickly finds that poetry isn’t the only thing on the agenda. Somebody is killing off young gay men around town, and students are nervous. And by the way, didn’t Socrates swear off love? So why’s he finding himself attracted to his hot, human teacher?

Devin Gold loves his work. The great poets are his favorites to share with his English lit students, and while teaching, his life often seems just about perfect. But holy heck, his crazy Uncle Vince just blew into town and has even invaded Devin’s night classes, disrupting his life. Uncle Vince and Devin’s mom think they’re vampire hunters. Devin knows there’s no such thing, and has lived with the shame of their insanity all his life. Now his uncle swears that LA, even night school, is swarming with fangers.

How can Devin keep his sudden attraction to his handsome new student, Socrates, a secret? He’s not sure, but he has to try, especially since his obsessive uncle will undoubtedly insist that Socrates is a vampire. It’s tough being a sane human in La La Land…

Update: Silver Publishing Owner on the Run

By A.J. Llewellyn

They say loose lips sink ships, and apparently not everybody was happy to see Lodewyk Deysel, AKA author Leiland Dale return to his family’s humble abode in Rugby, Cape Town, South Africa last Thursday.

It seems that some locals have not forgotten that he got away with embezzling R60,000 ($5,625 US) in 2005 from a fruit and nut company he worked for before fleeing to the US.

A few of them read my blog.

The power of the Internet, people!

One former friend of his became scandalized when reading that Lodewyk Deysel had used his own mother’s name – S. Hemmings – as the alleged owner of Emerald Entertainment, the new, non-existent company that he claimed was taking over Silver…

Yes. Some people from his past realized he was up to his old tricks, and that authorizing his assistant to sell his RV – she admitted on my Facebook wall that she got $10,000 for it and put the funds in his bank account – was another form of fraud.

A former co-worker and another ex-friend of his contacted me after reading my expose on the soap opera-like developments.

Some people – people who have integrity – have  a problem with somebody stiffing their employer. So Silver Publishing, LLC was not Lodewyk’s first trip to the rodeo.

Nope. His theft in Cape Town was target practice.

Back in 2005, there was a criminal case involved and he made a deal with the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court but took off for sunnier shores in the US.

He reinvented himself as CEO of Silver Publishing LLC – not bad for a kid who never graduated high school.

Now, I have utter respect for anyone who can make their way in this world without a formal education. My father is one of those people. The amazing author Laurann Dohner, a New York Times best-seller, also makes no bones about not having graduated high school.

BUT –

I have no respect for people who use cunning and their beguiling personalities to charm money and favors out of people. Who steal, lie, swindle…from their employees and staff, AND their own company. Well, you get the idea.

He fled home last week after his friend and assistant Alisani Brazil (AKA Allison Kelleman), former perfume CEO and current, proud flight attendant for Endeavor Air, dropped him at the airport.

She is a charm school drop-out for sure. When I contacted her to beg her not to sell the RV that the money belonged to authors she said on my Facebook Wall:

Alisani Brazil · Friends with Leiland Dale and 34 others

oh dear people… you guys are sadly misinformed and it’s in his account already.

April 10 at 9:19pm · Like

Good to know!

When DJ Manly and I tried to talk to her she bantered back and forth in a demeaning manner. She claimed not to be working for Lodewyk Deysel in spite of her LinkedIn resume saying so:

Alisani Brazil · Friends with Leiland Dale and 34 others

What? My job concerns me. It’s called flying the friendly skies and living a dream that I’ve wanted to do for years. I’m a lucky girl. Apparently you guys aren’t because you’re ranting about who knows what. I focus on need to know things and getting wrapped up in your drama is not a need to know for me

April 10 at 10:01pm · Like

Hmm…maybe she’s friendlier in the sky??

Meanwhile back in Cape Town, Lodewyk gave locals conflicting accounts for his sudden arrival. He told some people he had immigration issues. He told others that he owed ONE author money and was being threatened.

He told everyone he’d be staying three months – until he became aware of my blog.

According to Alisani Brazil, Lodewyk’s dog Gracie was supposed to be sent to him in June because he was expecting money then.

After consulting with his former staffers, we all assume he is waiting for Silver Publishing’s quarterly royalties – so he can steal those as well.

Pooling all the information I have, the best tally I can make is that he owes the people he’s stiffed $259,000.

I thought it was a lot but apparently not enough for the police in his town to arrest him.

“It’s a civil matter,” they told our representative, though their interest in Lodewyk M. Deysel became sparked at the mention of a previous embezzlement case.

We were told the same thing by the Michigan police. But no worries, I now know of two people who are suing him in that state.

He and Alisani have been doing a lot of house cleaning. And I don’t just mean his luxury home in Grosse Point, MI that she’s been busy rectifying after he left it looking like trash.

No. They have both deleted many incriminating posts on their Facebook walls and he has completely deleted his Lodewyk Deysel account. Other links provided in my last blog have suddenly vanished.

Silver Publishing is dead. It closes its doors finally on May 1. A notice on it now indicates the board is staying up to allow people time to download their purchased books.

In the meantime, readers who made advance sale purchases have been refunded – at the authors’ insistence.

We’ve made this situation as public as possible.

Lodewyk M. Deysel can do all the deleting of online accounts he wants. But I have a little thing called Screen Caps.

And I will also say this. Plans are in motion, even though I am told he intends to move to France next week. He can flee again if he likes, but for the moment, we former authors of Silver Publishing stand united.

We will get you. One way or another. You will be forced to be responsible for your crimes.

You can run, but you can’t really hide.

I see it’s 72 degrees and sunny in your neck of the woods, Lodewyk. I hope you enjoy warm weather…because it’s about to get a hell of a lot hotter.

TARNISHED SILVER or WYOMING-GATE by A.J. Llewellyn

I have updated and amended this blog to keep current. As of this moment, 4/11/14 the information is as accurate as I can make it. Silver Publishing LLC is still in existence as a website. It boasts one lone author, Leiland Dale, the company owner.

It is my hope that readers will be refunded money they paid for pre-ordered books. It is only fair. But then nothing is fair with this man. He stiffed hard-working staff, stole from friends and really ripped off his authors.

I’ve spent some time compiling this report. As of now it looks like Lodewyk Deysel, AKA Leiland Dale has set up another website to lure in fresh talent. Writer Beware!

http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=184764&page=10

It has been all over the Internet for approximately two years that Silver Publishing, LLC, is a company in deep distress doing business in an unorthodox manner…its sole owner, Lodewyk Deysel, AKA gay romance author Leiland Dale, may have started with good intentions but quickly began not paying staff and authors, telling one lie after another.

And now, things have crashed completely.

I tracked down Alisani Brazil, an alleged former employee who told me that Lodewyk Deysel has fled. He went to South Africa on Monday – although she told me it was Tuesday. She took him to the airport but claimed she had no idea all this was going on.

It was a fluke I tracked her down just now. She said she hadn’t spoken to him in two years (a claim disputed by her LinkedIn resume).

She said he called her Saturday midnight and told her he needed to leave town in a hurry. She sold his RV for him yesterday – she said, and yet I found a listing for it alive and kicking!

http://www.rvt.com/Fleetwood-American-Allegiance-34K-1998-Grosse-pointe-farms-MI-ID5649105-UX147572?similarrv_local=0&nl=#emailseller

She also has listed his TV on her Facebook wall – a TV that he bought out of authors’ earnings.

“Pre owned Mitsubishi 60″ dlp TV in perfect condition!! $350. Only 1.5 year old!!!”

I begged her to take the listing down because she was aiding and abetting a fugitive from justice. She said the TV was already sold and yet the photo is still there.

She was not concerned about the people he has defrauded. In fact she was very defensive. I was enraged to see her boasting about the kindle fire “a friend” gave her and –

She even lied to me about the day he left. Look at her post, “chlling with my bestie at the airport”

I wonder which friend that might have been?

She aided and abetted a criminal.

https://www.facebook.com/alisani.brazil?fref=ts

I am not certain she IS a former employee. Her LinkedIn page indicates she’s still involved with the company. In fact her resume lists royalty payments as one of her duties!

http://www.linkedin.com/in/alisanibrazil?_mSplash=1

I called the police in her hometown of Harristown Township, Michigan, to report the crime. Dispatcher #31 would not help. He told me to call my local police. That I had to follow proper procedure.

That TV and the RV are items that should have been sold for the authors.

He has moved out of his house and his stuff is gone. Goodbye royalties. He told her he has shut the company down – or so she says. I think she helped him escape and planned to keep doing so.

At the time of this writing, Lodewyk is pretending to one staffer via cell phone that he is still in Michigan. She has now been informed otherwise.

He is GONE.

Alisani Brazil said he left town with $80 in his pocket. I think the rest is in his offshore account. Since she lied about everything else I don’t take her word on the cash lolling in his pants.

He is having his dog Gracie sent out to him in South Africa, but his accountant is looking after the dog in the meantime. SHE is the accountant…so I guess she’s the one looking after the pooch.

Flying a dog halfway across the world is expensive…but yeah, I would be stupid to believe he has $80 to his name.

She did however confirm that Lodewyk was here in the US illegally and cannot come back here for 10 years.

He left her to clean his place and complained about having to sell the RV. “I am not a happy camper,” she said, ironically.

She was stunned when I told her what was going on. He had told her his mum was sick and he needed to go home to her.

Not so…

I spoke to her for 25 mins. She said she thought she was going over to help him with business stuff, though if she is telling the truth, why would he reach out to a FORMER employee?  Anyway, she found him panicked, throwing things together and he got her to drive him to the airport. She is upset he left her with a huge mess. Yes. In more ways than one…
So that’s it kids. It’s over. I am so glad I hunted this woman down.

It begs the question:

Who is Lodewk Deysel? And how did all this happen?

Lodewyk M. Deysel first entered the US in December 2006. Our first verified knowledge of him is that he moved into a suburban home [address withheld] in Detroit, Michigan, immediately upon arrival.

He joined Facebook on December 9, 2006 and his personal page as Lodewyk Deysel, Publisher of Silver Publishing says he was born April 21, 1980 in Rugby, Western Cape, South Africa.

https://www.facebook.com/lodewyk.deysel?fref=ts

He says he attended Buren High School in Ysterplaat, South Africa in 2002 and graduated in 2006. If this is accurate – and he states all this himself – it means he attended high school from the age of 22 to 26!

There is no way of knowing if he DID attend this school and actually graduated.

He seems to have left high school and come straight to the US.

I can find no background information on him in South Africa so none of this might be true, but this seems to be fitting considering his soon-to-be-revealed established pattern of secrets, fantasies, and outright lies.

On this same page he proudly proclaims he graduated with a PhD in Accounting from Belford University in 2011 but this is a fraudulent online university which offered unaccredited degrees for “life experiences” and has since been shut down. The owner, 30-year old Salem Kureshi, ran this scheme from his apartment in Karachi, Pakistan and was forced to pay out $22.7 million in damages.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belford_University

Lodewyk’s US arrival date of December 2006 (as verified by his former landlady) is interesting because he has never left the country since…BUT he was allegedly in South Africa when he created Silver Publishing in 2009…but more on that bit of fraud coming up…

I discovered that his landlady at the suburban Detroit house he lived in shared the same name as an author/reviewer/publicist I know from the Internet. Was it a coincidence? I was shocked to see her name because I was certain she was the same woman that my friend and frequent co-author D.J. Manly and I know as a huge fan of M/M authors, and a supportive online friend.

I contacted her. She was stunned that I knew about her involvement with Lodewyk Deysel. She confirmed that she, her husband and six kids rented him a room in their single family home (which has 1 bathroom!!!) in 2006.

He was a struggling writer. He mostly stayed in his room with his beloved dog, Gracie.

She had no idea of his background or any details about his past.

From his Facebook page, it is clear he started a relationship with a man in Liverpool, Ohio since he posted photos of him and his dog during the visit and states he is In a Relationship on April 26.

The relationship appears to have failed because by May he’d set up an online dating account listing his address as East Liverpool, Ohio.

http://www.meetme.com/member/4781781

All of this is personal data, but it establishes a pattern of dishonesty because he was supposedly in South Africa all this time.

He stayed with his landlady’s family until 2010. He had no job yet always paid his rent on time. He was secretive about his activities but somehow managed to pay his rent without any income for FOUR years.

This author’s husband disliked him. Lodewyk had no discernible income but seemed to always have money. During his last year with the family, he created Silver Publishing and began inviting authors that she suggested he should work with to give him books.

I know this to be true because he invited me and DJ to submit books to him.

He offered us 90% royalties on our first book. 90%! For the first two years then royalties would drop to 60%. This was still a huge, for me, unprecedented royalty and we jumped at the chance figuring we’d start with one book and see how it went.

My experience with the inept editor who handled my book The Oasis was so bad I stopped submitting there, but DJ did well there with various paranormal titles and we collaborated on Mirrors, which turned out to be one of our biggest-selling books.

This was a much better creative experience for me, so I submitted more work. I even gave Silver Publishing the rights to my self-produced audio book for Phantom Lover.

Silver’s editors were all replaced by then. There seemed to be an endless revolving door of staff members. One former editor wrote me saying she was leaving because he hadn’t paid her. This stunned me because the company seemed to be doing so well.

Lodewyk started making money fast with authors that just seemed to capture readers’ imaginations. In the beginning, though royalties were supposed to be paid quarterly, he paid early.

Authors loved that!

At this point in 2010, he moved out of the eight-member family’s humble house into a swanky new place on 91 Sand Bar Lane, Detroit, MI 48214.

This is when it seems his financial problems began. The company took off so fast and made so much money, he began to spend. And spend…

And woo hoo! he had cool new digs.

The house was huge but from a Google search looks remote and not particularly lush… besides, he’d begun to develop expensive tastes and it didn’t take long for him to move from Sand Bar Lane into a gorgeous, big house in Grosse Pointe, eight miles east of Detroit.

His former landlady says “He wanted to live like rich people.” A Google Earth map search of his physical address at 16355 E. Jefferson Ave, Grosse Point, MI 48224 shows it to be a sumptuous residence – it looks like Southfork!! – in which he resides with his dog and at various times, different assistants are there helping him.

He does not appear to have ever paid taxes, either personally or as Silver Publishing LLC, and staff members and authors began to complain publicly about monies owed.

Where did all the money go?

Because in late 2011 to early 2012, some authors began to realize their payments had stalled.

For me, when I checked in the spring of 2012, it had been five months without a dime.

For others, they never, ever received a payment.

He’d fob people off with “your book didn’t get any third-party payments” or in some cases, a promise of something next quarter. Some people he never even responded to.

I heard a lot of stories and began to worry. I was stunned when I began receiving emails saying he was organizing an author retreat. I couldn’t believe it. I got many, many emails asking about what food I like and would I vote on the destination for this trip.

He seems to have made the classic mistake of expanding too fast and spending everything that turned up in his Paypal account.

Lodewyk updated the Silver website – but this lavish new space has always had problems with crashing. He also invested in an expensive Workflow system, which was an oxymoron.

It forced authors to submit online and for the first couple of months the Workflow was inoperable.

It also forced authors and editors to communicate and exchange book edits this way.

And then I received an email saying he was coming to America and would I be interested in meeting him? He’d contacted all his US authors and embarked on a  nationwide tour in a big RV between June and August with a couple of staff members. These adventures are catalogued in online photos in his Facebook account as Leiland Dale.

https://www.facebook.com/leilanddale?fref=ts

He also organized the author retreat for September. I don’t know how he pulled off this “I’ve moved to the US” shtick when he was here all along, but he did it beautifully.

Lodewyk Deysel has no driver’s license and doesn’t drive – a big red flag which could indicate he is here illegally. This former landlady said he is, and various authors confirm this. Not being here legally means he can therefore not obtain a driver’s license. He does however pay car insurance on a recreational vehicle  (my skip tracer was able to find this) but the vehicle was listed as a Silver Publishing company vehicle until it was sold April 9, 2014.

He apparently spent a lot of money on the vehicle, against his friends’ advice. He had employees drive the vehicle for him during his adventure in the great outdoors.

His various assistants in the past and his current assistant/accountant drove him around – until he skipped town on Monday.

And now to Silver Publishing…

He registered the company in South Africa in 2009. Since early emails showed a South African ISP for some people, this can easily be explained.

He was using a proxy ISP. One can buy packages for around $400 to disguise real ISP addresses. Once he established his move here in early 2012 when he was here all along, and, emboldened by his new-found fortune, embarked on his coast-to-coast tour, he no longer needed to pretend he was in South Africa.

He was already stiffing people on payments and when they tried to find him, they realized it was all smoke and mirrors. There WAS no company in South Africa. No physical address.

Lodewyk had quietly changed the company’s registration from South Africa to Michigan.

A US address suddenly popped up, listed in Grosse Pointe, MI. This caused a lot of confusion for some authors. They weren’t even sure it was a legitimate address since this particular tract of land was new and at the time nothing showed up on Google Search. One enterprising author’s accountant lived nearby. After sending numerous requests for payment for his client – and being ignored – the accountant drove past the address – which turned out to be a UPS and mail box drop.

Lodewyk was spending everything that came into the company and suddenly, when the heat turned up, instead of taking care of things correctly, he went ahead with his ill-advised author retreat in the mountains of Tennessee for the first week of September, 2012.

A former employee of Lodewyk’s has confirmed all of these findings. She has kept emails with certain details and said that he spent more on this retreat than she did on buying her own home.

She said he bought numerous Kindles as gifts for family, friends, blog contests… He bought Silver swag to give his authors when they arrived in Tennessee.

And all of it with royalties that should have been paid to Silver authors. This employee quit before the retreat actually took place.

He flew his mother out from South Africa to attend both his nationwide tour and the infamous retreat.

She knew he’d been living here for six years. Did she not think it was weird that he was claiming to have just moved here?

And was she proud when he drunkenly confessed to some authors that he was here illegally?

Authors said nothing…the few who were at the retreat and knew these things cared more about getting paid than telling the rest of us what they knew…

Which allowed him to conduct business as usual.

Back home from his vacation, he continued to spend, spend, spend, as authors became alarmed and royalties stopped being paid all together by August 2012.

What is almost unbelievable is that many of the authors who attended the retreat were already owed a lot of money. One author posted photos on her Facebook account saying, “I’m having such a great time and it isn’t costing me a penny!”

Oh, yes it was. That’s where her royalties went…

According to his former landlady who remained friends with Lodewyk, he thought the big money would never stop flying through the door and it didn’t, but he kept spending.

He had a flair for generosity – such as the retreat – contributing money to one author’s political campaign in NYC, and buying his employees gifts.

But after the author retreat, even his precious high-earning authors who traveled from as far as the UK for it began to scream.

He went radio silent, trying to figure out his next move.

Lodewyk owed so many people money he had to figure out something. He sent out a blanket email claiming extreme illness, which bought him some time.

In all of his proven, verifiable dealings with his authors, every move he makes is a stall tactic.

For two months he did this, claiming to have hired an accounting firm but gave no details. He said they were going over things and that these things take time. Again, it was another delay tactic.

Two MONTHS went by before he came up with a complicated repayment scheme. His plan was to pay 20% of past-due royalties plus all current ones.

He said in no uncertain terms that authors who stayed with him would receive all monies owed. He admitted in writing that he’d spent his authors’ earnings and said he’d made mistakes.

It was mind-blowing to admit such fraud on a grand scale.

People wondered what kind of accountants would recommend such a haphazard plan, but some authors bolted. Some stayed.

The lies kept tumbling out. His claims – which have been widely reposted online – were untrue. Hit with legal letters from a few authors, he made secret deals with them to pay them back monthly, all the while PRETENDING to have his loyal authors’ best interests at heart.

It is clear he resents paying the authors he owed most and another former employee says she quit because she became uncomfortable at the way he continued to spend money. Each time royalties came in he’d say, “Let’s go shopping!” and off they’d go.

What is disturbing is that she said as early as 2011 he was altering authors’ royalty reports. She observed him doing so.

What is sad is that Silver made the money. He proved the model worked. He could give authors generous royalty payments, but his greed got in the way.

He made some payments, but not to some remaining authors who also began pulling their books.

When these authors began blogging about their experiences, he claimed on the phone to DJ Manly that the company’s income dropped from $45,000 a month to $10,000.

And yet, I ran a check and his US division of Silver, established in 2011 claims a revenue of $78,000 a year.

http://www.manta.com/c/mwfztyr/silver-publishing-llc

It was less than he owed one particular author – who has publicly claimed he owed her $90,000 but the figure was probably less. Even if he owed her say $60,000, his official income claimed is slightly above this number and therefore cannot be accurate.

How is this possible when he has several authors including me and DJ who have made him good money?

Another site indicates the company makes $82,000 a year –

http://companies.findthebest.com/l/8887273/Silver-Publishing-Llc-in-Grosse-Pointe-Farms-MI

When a few authors bailed and got legal representation in early 2013, he worried about his unblemished official criminal record.

I ran a criminal background check but he is clean…all that will soon change in all likelihood.

In order to keep his record clean – doing otherwise would alert authorities to his illegal activities – he made secret deals with these authors to pay them monthly installments. To do this, he avoided paying his other authors.

By mid 2013, things were a shambles in his lovely, lush, Grosse Point abode. People were hounding him for money and his addiction to electronic goods and online spending meant that anything that came in, went out again.

He stopped spending time altering most authors’ royalty reports. He simply stopped sending these out. Authors that made very little money got reports – that may or may not have been authentic – but no actual payments.

Some authors got payments but the figures did not match those on their author dashboards.

This was another bone of contention. Nothing added up. Figures on the dashboard changed like the wind.

In desperation last year he borrowed $7500 from his former landlady to pay off installments owed to two authors with whom he’d made the secret deals.

The rest of us got nothing so he could pay off his debts to them. At some point, he couldn’t meet those payments from his authors’ royalties any longer.

He borrowed the money from her. She has a signed contract with him specifically stating the short-term loan’s purpose, but he never paid her back. She is taking him to court. It’s on the docket for June but she told me he was so afraid of the legal system  that he would pay up before the due date.

The last time she spoke to him, he told her he was planning to move back to South Africa. Which of course, he has.

She said she had, up until now avoided legal action because she’d hoped he would pay her. To keep in his good graces and hopefully see her money come back to her she has stayed friendly/ She listened to his endless woes as she and her husband went through hell.

They have lost their home and he doesn’t care. “He doesn’t feel anything,” she said.

In spite of her husband’s fury that she lent Lodewyk the money, when he called last year crying, telling them he’d been beaten up for being gay, they went and picked him up because they felt sorry for him.

Now she is afraid to tell her husband that he’s fled the country.

It’s no good thinking he will get a judgment against him. His company as of today no longer exists and he has no social security number to record it. It is as if…he doesn’t exist.

Further investigation shows that during this time he seemed to be trying to establish a new life in Pennsylvania. It cannot be a coincidence that a man by the same name has set up a company called Silver Solutions, in Shippensburg, PA, though information is sketchy.

A Pattern of Deceit and Fraud

In February of 2014, Lodewyk knew his authors had united and were not going to be fobbed off anymore with lies. After his usual long period of silence, in early March he sent out a blanket email stating that he was liquefying his assets in South Africa and closing that division.

It was a clever move in that he knew that if he bankrupted that company, the hefty payments he’d been paying the three authors he’d made secret deals with would be null and void.

He told us he was selling the US division of Silver Publishing but would not reveal who the buyer was.

His former landlady said he knows she lost her home but has never attempted to repay a penny. He is obsessed only with his company and she has confirmed there was never a buyer for Silver Publishing. He TOLD her he was going to recreate the company under a new name and that he would stay on as publisher.

One has to wonder why ANY reputable investor would get involved with Silver. A Google Search shows an immediate array of damaging blogs.

Once he came up with the clever idea of selling his tarnished company, and since he is a virtual hermit with an Internet addiction, he quickly discovered he could create a new LLC dirt cheap in Wyoming! Not only that, Wyoming is a haven for tax evasion that protects against pesky creditors – creditors like his authors.

He planned on reinventing himself continuing to use other authors to keep raking in money.

Using the name Empire Entertainment, he quietly established his new venture in May, 2013 (and also creating the Silver US division.) As things got slowly worse at Silver, he planned his bold move to announce his company sale, and the closure of Silver’s South African division.

Repeating his pattern of long silences, ignored registered letters and emails, he sent out two blanket emails that made no real sense and caused a lot of confusion.

He claimed that existing authors contracted with the US division (contracts signed after May 2013) would be kept on with the new company. Most Silver Authors had no idea which Silver Publishing they were contracted to…

It is unclear why he never bothered to create a website for his new company and why he failed to cover his tracks better, but – it seems he wanted to use the URL of www.empireentertainmentllc.com.

It was registered at the time to another company (it was on their FB page) but that business went under in Sept 2013. Knowing the domain was going to become available, he might have waited in the belief that none of us would turn detective.

He made a grave error in sending out a second blanket email to his authors posing as the new publisher, S. Hemmings, of Empire Entertainment, saying the company was a new one out of Wyoming. And yet the same Grosse Point address featured at the bottom of the email.

Authors went crazy trying to find anything about Empire Entertainment.

He will probably live to regret uttering the word Wyoming.

A careful examination revealed why he chose the Cowboy State. Another author and I posted our findings on the Silver Author and Silver Business Loops on Facebook.

Empire Entertainment LLC registered its shiny new business at 1712 Pioneer Avenue, Cheyenne, Wyoming. This address is a well-known shell company for 2000 fraudulent companies. The local police department told a Silver author who went in to file a complaint that they know all about this empty single-level building but cannot do anything about it.

After an author posted some information online on the Silver Authors loop on April 3, I also found some information. I posted it on the Silver Publishing loop.

These were the links – and what I posted at 10.22am.

It is all over the Silver Authors loop that the address for this alleged new publishing company is associated with heavy fraud and shell companies. The address is even listed in a fraud report. This is not an authentic company. What the hell is going on?http://www.ripoffreport.com/r/wyoming-corporate-services-inc/cheyenne-wyoming-82001/wyoming-corporate-services-inc-wyomingcompanycom-reuters-special-report-a-little-hous-1107690

No response from Lodewyk.

I then posted another link.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/06/28/oukwd-uk-usa-shell-companies-idAFTRE75R22L20110628

It took him over two hours to respond.

  • I have spoken to one of the owners and they have told me that Wyoming Corporate Services is their registered agent but they are in no other way associated with the company except them being their registered agent. I was told that they are moving to a new reputable registered agent as they don’t want to be associated with the above company.

AJ Llewellyn I am sorry Leiland but I am not reassured. I do not want to do business with a company as hopeless as Empire Entertainment when they don’t seem to know they registered with a shell company in the first place. Did you research them at all? Or did you just hand over your company to a group of people with no clue and no concern about your authors? This bodes very badly for the future.

Again a long silence: then,

Leiland Dale Of course I researched them. We discussed their business proposal and I reviewed the related documents. I would never throw any of our authors under a bus like that. But why would anyone review their registered agent. The registered agent does not have a stake in Silver. What matters is the company, not the agent. Every business, regardless of which state they are in, is required to have a registered agent. Besides, Empire informed me they’ve already taken proactive steps, even though there is no threat to the company or anyone from their registered agent, to change agents. Hopefully their proactive nature eases some concerns.

Can you count the number of times he mentions registered agent?

I went berserk. I was sick of his BULL and said:

AJ Llewellyn Leiland I find this troubling. What kind of information were you able to find? They have no web presence at all except they are a company registered under a shell name – it seems highly suspicious to me. I can’t trust them at all. Nothing is clear with them. That’s what concerns me. They don’t have a website…nothing. No contact info. I’ve been in the business a long time. It’s all very disturbing.

Lodewyk’s responses to our findings have been underwhelming to say the least. There is no proof that the alleged S. Hemmings and Donna Michaels – purported investors in Empire Entertainment – exist.

Nobody has personally heard from S.Hemmings, and he and Donna do not appear to exist at all. There is simply nothing on either of them.

Lodewyk wrote his one email pretending to be S. Hemmings, but this person has never been heard from again. Neither has his alleged associate, Donna. Both were supposed to join the Business loop on Facebook to assuage authors’ fears.

“Donna” did interact with one author– stupidly – but apparently thought she was as dumb as he is.

She notified me that “Donna” was actually Lodewyk. No surprise really.

Here it is. Evidence that Lodewyk is Donna. There is no Empire.

Meanwhile neither Donna nor. S. Hemmings ever showed up on the Facebook group.

They never showed up anywhere.

Lodewyk’s plot quickly dissolved.

As far as my skip tracers are concerned, he has no unease about monies owed or other people’s problems. One of them has advised sending an attorney’s letter with our findings to ensure we get our rights back. In fact, one skip tracer told me Lodewyk having been caught would probably claim the company’s sale to Empire Entertainment fell through (which he did on the night of April 8).

Her next prediction was that he would close down all together…

Which he has, with no notification to his authors.

Up until today he was still making money from the royalties even though books aren’t listed on his site anymore. They are still on third party sites and payments will be coming in…payments he will never give us.

He has hurt many, many people. Hopefully he will spend his ill-gotten gains well in South Africa. I doubt it.

Some people never learn. They just go on to run new schemes and scams.

Chapter Two

I knew a bit about zashiki warashi, but nothing about how to get rid of them. The spirit, once it became aware that we were talking about him, began to materialize.

He was a long, thin child with a bad haircut; the old soup-bowl-over-the-head style, and a face the color of a tomato. His features were fierce, but he smiled down at Keej, who seemed blissfully unaware of him.

“Oh my God,” Tem said, in a dramatic tone. He began talking to me in my head.  “You said it was a bad thing, but I’m reading that to attract and maintain a zashiki warashi in the home—”

“Why would we want to do that?” I asked aloud, keeping my voice low as Keej ran around touching some of Akua’s toys stacked on shelves against the living room wall.

My nephew peeped out from under the wing chair, a look of fury on his face. He’s never had to share, and now, he had to do so with a kid who came with a scary companion.

“Shut up!” Tem stamped his foot so hard everyone in the room turned to stare at him, including the zashiki warashi.

“Just listen.” Tem’s tone turned icy. He resumed talking to me mentally. “To keep the spirit happy—”

“Do I want to keep it happy?”

“Yes! Listen. The spirit must be noticed, appreciated, and cared for properly, much in the manner one would raise a child, though too much attention may drive it off.”

I vote for driving it off. And besides, how much attention is too much?”

We can’t drive it off. Once a zashiki warashi inhabits a house, it brings the residence great fortune; on the other hand, should a zashiki warashi depart, the domain soon falls into a steep decline.”

“Holy crap!” I stared at the specter, which was on the floor playing with Keej. The kid interacted with him in a way that made me realize he knew all about his ghostly companion.

They’re buddies,” I said in my head.

Looks like it. How do we look after it? I mean, him?”

No idea. Besides, I don’t care what Giggle says. These spirits are supposed to be bad luck.”

“Google,” Tem corrected me aloud. He glared at me. “And decline is not a hot shade. It doesn’t match my furnishings.”

I cleared my throat. I’d have to agree and let the zashiki warashi live here, unless I wanted to start sleeping alone. Outside. “Um, Keej darling,” I started to say when I realized the kid was talking to Akua.

Keej scooted across the floor over to the wing chair and held out a building block to Akua. A building block! Man, I was worried Akua would fling it right in Keej’s eye, but then the zashiki warashi got down on the floor too. I could hear his boyish, sing-song tone, but couldn’t understand anything he said.

Akua, shuddering in fear at first, soon began to smile. Smile! I never saw my nephew smile unless he was up to no good.

The zashiki warashi encouraged Akua out from his hiding place and soon they were all building what looked like a fortress. Akua didn’t seem to mind Keej opening boxes of Lego. Even though Akua barely touched the things, he was possessive of his toys. Even Tem looked stupefied when no outburst soon followed.

He gestured me away from the happy group.

I shook my head. “Does Goggle say anything about the zashiki warashi making trouble?

Tem looked at me in exasperation. “Google, Div.” He reverted to telepathing again. “They are inclined to mischief. So what? Look at how he handles Akua. Our little boy is actually playing!”

Yeah, I’d noticed that. And playing nicely, too.

They do more than mischief,” I said in my mind. “I’ve heard stories—”

“That I don’t want to know about.” Tem shook his head at me. And then the impossible happened. Akua began to laugh.

The three amigos were playing with all of Akua’s blocks given to him by well-meaning relatives over the years who’d tried desperately to encourage his creativity and imagination. He’d shown no interest in Lego or K’reo, or even the Super Mario K’nex kit everyone said was the bomb. Suddenly, he was on his knees helping an increasingly giddy Keeej use parts and pieces from the Super Mario Ghost House to decorate the walls of what I realized now was a spiffy-looking castle.

I was full of hope until I caught a spiteful glance from the zashiki warashi that shocked me.

Tem didn’t notice it. He was too busy joining in the fun.

“We need a moat,” he declared, dropping to his knees. “Come on, Div. Find the box of plastic reptiles.”

“Reptiles?”

“Yes. We need a crocodile.”

“Why?”

“Because every moat has to have a crocodile.” The two little boys and the zashiki warashi nodded at me.

I felt like a moron. How could I not have known this? I found the reptiles but couldn’t find a crocodile. Nobody liked my suggestion of a brontosaurus in the moat.

“Don’t be silly,” Tem said. “Everybody knows that the brontosaurus prefers to lie in a hammock and watch everybody else work.”

His three friends nodded at me. I seriously began to dislike the zashiki warashi. It— he—was hijacking my family, and I didn’t like it at all. I retreated to the kitchen where the women in our house were canoodling as they made dinner.

“Div, settle an argument for us, will you?” Clancy asked. She was so giggly, I suspected she’d been tippling the champagne I could see her using to sauté shrimp

and lobster pieces in a pan on the stove.

“If I can.”

“What’s wrong?” My sister, Heavenly, knows me too well. I inclined my head outside and the girls followed me. I noticed one of the horses grazing on Tem’s carefully planted carrot patch but ignored it. I knew I would pay for that decision later.

I quickly told them about our zashiki warashi.

They didn’t have the reaction I’d expected, or, frankly, hoped for.

“But that’s wonderful,” Clancy said. “They only like to stay in well-maintained and preferably large old houses. He must like us!” She beamed at me and Heavenly.

I stared as my sister snapped her fingers. “This is why Keej’s family burned his things. They knew there was something around him and thought it would get rid of the problem.” She stopped speaking and bit her lip.

“What?” I prompted.

“We must protect Keej. The zashiki warashi has attached himself to Keej for a reason. I’m wondering what horrible things happened to Keej before his parents were killed.”

“And after it.” Clancy’s face turned dark. “I don’t like the sounds of his creepy family over there in Kona.”

“Wait,” I said, dropping my voice. “Remember what Joshua told us? The relatives said he was rambunctious. He’s been here ten minutes and I have to admit, he hasn’t showed signs of it. He seems like a good little boy.”

“Oh!” Clancy let out a shout, then lowered her voice again. “I remember now. Zashiki warashi can be mischievous. Maybe that’s who’s rambunctious.”

I nodded. “Exactly.”

“We have to make friends with it,” Heavenly said. “Everybody knows it’s bad luck to send them away from a home.”

I looked at her. How come everyone else in the world knew this except me?

“Do we know its name?” Heavenly asked.

“It’s a he, and no, I don’t.”

The girls marched back inside and I followed. Heavenly’s horse had grabbed hold of Tem’s favorite purple carrots and was demolishing them. Until I met Tem I’d had no idea that all carrots were purple before the seventeenth century. Now he took pride in his organic crops that neighbors—and apparently, horses— hankered for.

I had bigger fish to fry though and darted inside, reaching the living room just in time to hear Clancy asking Keej about his zashiki warashi.

“You can see him?” Keej’s eyes grew huge.”

“Sure I can. We all can,” Clancy lied. I could tell she didn’t know where to look. My sister could see him though. She looked right at the specter.

“They usually only appear to family members, and more often than not, the children,” Heavenly said. “What is his name, Keej?”

Keej’s face took on an uncertain look, until Tem gathered him in his arms.

“We want to know, and welcome your friend,” Tem said, kissing the little boy’s head.

“We…ll, his name is…” Keej became bashful, glancing up at the zashiki warashi.

“His name is Tijlaug,” Akua said, invading the tense moment.

“Tijlaug.” I repeated it.

“He’s my friend too!” Akua looked at me in a challenging way, as if he dared me to argue.

“That’s great, sweetie.” Oh, boy. We aren’t a family. We’re a freak show.

“Well, you and Tijlaug are here just in time for Hau’oli Makahiki Hou,” Tem said.

“What’s that?” Keej asked, still looking shy.

“It means Happy New Year. It’s New Year’s Eve and we’re so excited to have you here.” Tem kept his arms around Keej. He looked at Akua. “Aren’t we, sweetie?”

My nephew nodded and stuck a couple of ghost faces from the Super Mario Brothers kit into the moat.

“We need water for the moat,” Keej said.

“I’ll get it.” Akua raced off to the kitchen, shocking every adult in the house.

I sloped off to the privacy of my home office to call Blossom. I needed to get her advice on our unexpected guest.

Blossom was intrigued to know about the ghost, which she kept referring to as a parlor child. “Tijlaug is Hmong for older brother,” she said.

That surprised me, but then again, she was the oldest person I knew, hundreds of years old in fact, so nothing should have come as a shock when Blossom said it.

“Do you think it’s Keej’s dead brother?” I asked, cradling the cell phone against my ear. Moontime had jumped onto my desk, rubbing his head against my chin, craving attention. I stroked his gleaming head, aware of a sudden chill in the room.

My whole body stiffened. I knew it Tijlaug, and the feeling wasn’t good.

The zashiki warashi walked around my office, Moontime hissing at him. The cat threw himself against my chest, claws out.

“What’s happening?” Blossom asked.

“He’s in here.”

“The cat doesn’t like him.” Blossom’s statement alarmed me. Especially when she said, “Don’t ever leave them alone. Parlor children tend to see cats as competition as family guardians.”

“They do?” Wait till I told my husband this news.

“I want to meet this dead boy,” she said. “You asked if it could be Keej’s dead brother. Did he have one?”

“Not that I know of. I do know that his family was killed in a tsunami a few years ago. Joshua, the children’s home director said his parents and grandparents were killed. But maybe there was a brother.”

“Or maybe he desperately wanted one.” Blossom went quiet. “He must have had a very difficult life, Jimmy.”

She was the only person who called me by my street name. It was unlike her to be so tender, but even Akua brought out the vampire queen’s softer side.

“Keej had been raised by relatives in Kona until recently. They burned all his things and took him to the police. He’s been at the home a week.”

“And they couldn’t wait to send him home with you.” There was a trace of bitterness in her voice. “I’d say our little parlor child pulls more than the average prank, but I would need to meet him to decide how serious things are.

“The parlor child has been with him a long time. They attach themselves to children in need. We have no idea of his history. Until he becomes a full-fledged member of our family, we have to decide if we can put up with the dead, as well as the living, Jimmy-San.”

“I agree with that.” I stole a glance at the zashiki warashi. He was busy flitting about moving things around. Whatever turns him on, I suppose. I watched him moving Tem’s beautiful arrangement of hand-grown Glory of Mexico orchid away from its spot by the window.

Tem would have a meltdown if he saw it.

The zashiki warashi was having fun with his silly pranks. Then he began hissing back at the cat, now hiding on my lap. I felt bad for Moontime, whose heart thundered against my thigh.

“Some parlor children are quite harmless, but be aware they can do a few weird things to freak out strangers and guests to your home,” Blossom said.

“Weird like how?” I watched the ghost switch cushions on my sofa. Tem was a color-coordinating freak. He would go ballistic. I couldn’t see this situation ending well. If it was true that houses fell into decline when a zashiki warashi fled the premises, I didn’t like to think about what would happen to us. The Thunder family had been cursed long enough. I’d known two hundred years of pain until I met Tem.

“Are you there?” I asked Blossom, anxious because the line seemed to be dead.

“I’m here. Just checking my resources.”

“Some ancient oracle?” I asked. Tem had long been fascinated by some of the ancient, priceless objects in her home.

“Google, actually.” She paused. “Well, according to what I am seeing, the parlor children can cause music to play in the house. Are you familiar with the kagura style of music, Jimmy?”

“Yeah. As it happens, Clancy took us all to a performance at the Shinto temple in Chinatown. It’s traditional Japanese folk dance with cymbals, drums and flute.” I’d enjoyed watching the pretend warriors dancing with swords, fighting off demons and other evil entities. If I’d known the evening could presage future events, I’d have paid more attention.

“Be prepared for some of that music at odd hours. In rooms that are otherwise empty. Oh, and they are also fond of leaving their footprints in ashes for unsuspecting humans to see.”

I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. Tem adored his polished, koa wood floors. But if this was the extent of the zashiki warashi‘s pranks, we could live with them.

“I want to meet him,” Blossom said. “Pick me up in fifteen minutes,” she said.

Aye, aye, captain.

In the kitchen, Clancy was giving my sister a kiss so strong, it looked like a tonsillectomy. I could hear shrieks of joy coming from the living room. The zashiki warashi shimmered past me and returned to the children. I telepathed Tem who quickly joined us. I told them about my conversation with Blossom.

Tem’s expression turned fierce. “Tijlaug is a darling. He would never hurt Moontime.”

“What are those claw marks on your face and arms?” my sister asked.

“Moontime. He’s scared to death of Tijlaug.”

Tem hooked a finger into my shirt collar and dragged me closer. He kissed me then licked a couple of my wounds.

“Mmm, tasty,” he whispered, giving me another kiss.

He was a bigger blood freak than I ever had been, and he loved flying around at night with me in search of human prey. We’d dispatched quite a few Waikiki bad guys. Our favorites were thieves and drug dealers. We enjoyed returning purloined purses to tearful tourists and disbursed the dealers’ cash to homeless people up and down Rivers Street. We were a bit like Robin Hood’s merry men, only, as far as I’m concerned, a hell of a lot sexier.

“We’ll go get the old bat,” Clancy said.

“No, I think Tem and I should go. I got the feeling Blossom wanted to see me. We won’t be gone long. Will you be okay with the boys?”

“Sure,” Clancy said. “By the way, how come I can’t see the ghost? It’s not fair!”

Tem’s attention had been diverted. He swiveled his head toward the window. He narrowed his eyes. “Is that horse eating all my carrots?”

“Let’s deal with that when we get home,” I said. “We gotta fly.”

“Okay.” He smiled then. Flying is his favorite thing in the whole wide world. Second only to fucking, of course.

The sun was setting over Waikiki as we flew hand in hand toward Blossom’s swanky condo on Nu’uanu Avenue. There was a time in my life, two centuries in fact, when I couldn’t fly. I had no love. I was a cursed vampire. And I paid the man who cursed me a fortune to do a spell that ensured me a chance to fall in love again. I’d just about given up when I met Tem.

Until I loved him, I’d never known such depths of love were possible. He was all the missing parts and pieces in my life. I would be shipwrecked without him. He was the first man I was ever with, and he will be my last.

Flying for one such as me, is possible only when one is in love. In the early days of my relationship with Tem, we had to hold hands fast. Now we don’t need to. As long as we’re together, close to one another, we can fly. We still hold hands though, because really, we’re still a couple of lovesick saps.

We arrived at Blossom’s apartment building located at the official start of Chinatown on the corner of Nu’uanu and North Beretania Street. Chinatown has burned down twice in the last couple of hundred years, but not on her watch. She is the district’s matriarch and rules the oldest Chinatown in America like a bitch on opium. Which she is.

At least, she was seriously addicted to opium until she found love. I wasn’t sure about the man she was so crazy about, but Tem, bless him sees the good in everybody, even the creepy Siberio. He claimed to be a Native American shaman but he appeared whiter than white to me. He also says to be possessed of all kinds of abilities, but I’d never seen him display any of them.

He also admits to being forty.

So does she.

They’re both big, great, bloody liars.

I suppose you could say they are a match made in um, hell.

We took in the magnificent Pacific Ocean below us and the bustling Chinatown traffic. The dim sum and noodle bars seemed to be in heavy action, which was cool. Sometimes I think about the Chinatown I knew before this one and it hurts my heart. I lifted Tem’s hand to my lips and kissed it.

“I can smell barbecued pork from up here!” he shouted, the wind whipping his lovely, long black hair into his eyes. We landed with soft thuds at the double glass doors of Blossom’s lanai. All the lights were on inside, unfortunately.

She was stark naked, except for a couple of paper fans placed in strategic places. She was doing a dance for him in red high heels.

Blossom, naked, was worse than seeing her squeezed in one of her tight, embroidered evening columns.

“My eys! My eyes!”I gasped, covering them.

“Oh, she looks fabulous,” Tem cooed. “Not one dimple on her thighs. Imagine that. Over four hundred years old and no cellulite!”

He knocked on the doors and they soon opened. The heavy scent of perfume and stale incense wafted out to us. And garlic. So help me, what was it with humans and their mania for garlic. It gave me indigestion just catching a whiff of it.

“What a body.” Tem gave Blossom a wolf whistle.

“Thank you, Tem-san.”

Silence.

I could still hear Carole King singing I Feel The Earth Move on the stereo. A strange stripping song, to be sure.

Tem slapped at my left arm. I had no choice but to uncover my eyes and say, “Very nice.” If I were Pinocchio, I’d be in some serious, sad-ass trouble.

“I’m going to change, boys.”

I stole a glimpse of her ass as she waddled off to her room. I had to admit she was slim but I knew she’d had the fat sucked off everything. She’d become an opium addict to stop herself from eating. She’d lived on opium pebbles and miso soup for years. And, of course, blood.

Tem and I sat on the sofa opposite Siberio. I couldn’t see what Blossom liked about him. She tended to go for younger, Asian twinks she would pair off to please her. It always ended badly when they’d run off and leave her.

And then she met Siberio. He looked about fifty and I detected a whiff of Preparation H. I could see it under his eyes. He was using it to disguise puffiness. An old plastic surgeon’s trick, according to Tem.

Dressed head to toe in black, he dyed his hair often, keeping it long, which must have been difficult since he had major bald spots all over his head. He and Blossom met during some full moon ritual. He got her off drugs and forced her to get all her black teeth removed and replaced with implants. These played havoc with her vampire canines, but she somehow managed.

The bigger problem was Siberio himself. Though we were grateful he’d weaned Blossom off opium, we suspected he was after her money. She spent a fortune on him but it was a drop in the bucket of what I knew was a vast amount of money to her name.

I was determined to get to the bottom of who he was and what he wanted, but right now, I had a parlor child in my house and we had to get back there.

“How’s things?” he asked. It was there again. I could hear it.

So can I,” Tem telepathed.

He was referring to Siberio’s strange accent. He tried so hard to speak like an American but I knew he was from Eastern Europe. Hard to disguise it. In my worst moments, I told Tem he came from Transylvania, but he’s no vampire. I’m not sure why Blossom won’t turn him but maybe it’s for the best.

“I have a new album recorded,” he said.

Oh, Buddha.

He ran to the iPod dock and fiddled with it. The opening strains of some fake, tropical music emerged. His specialty was polka. Lord help me. The idiot had combined the two. Tropical polka. Oh yeah. Poor Blossom. She’d probably invested in the project and would think it was freakin’ amazing because of it.

Siberio began to sway to it, air playing an imaginary ukulele. I wanted to drop kick him over the balcony.

“Wonderful,” Tem said. “I love it!”

Was he freaking kidding me? Before I could ask, Blossom reappeared in a cloud of perfume that stung my eyes. From the fumes, she emerged in a peacock blue sheath Tem had made for her. Covered in Swarovski crystals, I knew she’d weigh a ton in it. I sighed. I’d have to talk to him about making her something lighter.

“I’m ready boys.”

She was Mae West with black, lacquered hair. Many years ago, Blossom had her almond-shaped eyes Westernized. She must have been beautiful before she messed with her face.

“How long will you be, petal?” Siberio asked.

“Not long. As a matter of fact, drive over in an hour and pick me up.” She flicked her wrist in his direction. I detected fury in his gaze, but he hid it quickly. I didn’t blame him. She’d dismissed him. We took off from the lanai. I turned to look as we hit the sky. He peered up at us from the window, an eerie expression on his face that reminded me of the zashiki warashi. It left me with an unsettled feeling that lasted all the way home.

Inside, the place was quiet. I didn’t see dead bodies anywhere, which I had to take as a good sign.

We walked into the kitchen. “I smell hamburgers.” Blossom took an appreciative sniff.

“Where is everybody?” Tem was apprehensive.

“I hear music.” Blossom dipped her finger into a bowl of shrimp in champagne marinade. “Mmm. Good.”

Oh, man. I could hear music, too.

We stepped into the living room and all hell seemed to have broken loose. Toys were everywhere. We ran from room to room calling for my sister and Clancy. We found them on their knees in the bathroom giving Keej a bath. I was stunned to see Akua sitting on the edge of the bath, kicking his feet in the foamy water.

A miracle,” Tem telepathed.

The zashiki warashi di dn’t appear to be in the bathroom.

“Everything okay?” I asked the girls. They glanced up at us, exhausted, but smiling.

“Great.” Something in Heavenly’s eyes spoke of something wrong.

“Take over,” she said to Clancy. She gave me a meaningful look. I gathered she wanted to talk and that was fine by me. Blossom was standing right behind me, a strange look in his eyes.

“Something’s not right,” the old lady said as soon as the three of us were alone in the kitchen.

“I’ll say.” Heavenly took a deep breath. “I don’t trust that entity. He pinched Keej really hard and made him cry. I couldn’t believe it.”

“What made him do that?” I asked.

“I don’t know.” She looked ashen. “He wouldn’t stop doing it until Clancy started playing her violin. That poor little kid was screaming.”

“That’s not right.” Blossom shook her head. “They’re not supposed to hurt children.” She looked around. “Where is he? I don’t sense him anywhere.”

“He vanished. I told him off but he’s still around. Keej seems better now. He says he loves Tijlaug.”

“I think I need to talk to Keej’s relatives,” I said. I wanted to know what had made these people give up a sweet little boy who was being terrorized by what was supposed to be a protective spirit.

There was no information on the paperwork I’d received from the children’s home. All the numbers I called there went to voicemail, but I called Martha on her cell phone. Martha had befriended us. She sighed when she took my call.

“Is everything okay?” she asked me.

“Not really. I mean, we’re looking after him but he just had an emotional outburst.”

“Just now?”

“Not long ago,” I said.

“He’s had them every day at the same time ever since we got him. I shouldn’t be doing this but this is his uncle’s number.” She rattled off the digits and I ended our call, quickly making another one to the uncle.

He answered on the second ring. I told him who I was and that we were looking after Keej.

“Oh,” the man said. His voice went to a frightened whisper. “I don’t want my wife to know I’m talking to you. She’s petrified that child will wind up back here. Please. Lose my number. Forget we ever spoke, but heed my warning. Get him out of your house. Now. He makes the kid from The Exorcist look like a model child. He does very bad things.”

The man hung up on me just as Tem walked into the room, a look of alarm on his face.

“Div. I can’t find Moontime anywhere. I’ve called him and called him. I can’t tune into him at all.” Tears fell from his eyes. “Something’s wrong. I just know it. He always comes when I call. I’m so afraid for him. When I try to tune into him all I see is…” His voice trembled. “All I see is blood.”

The front doorbell rang just as crazy music started playing around the house.

“Holy crap!” Tem said as he peered out of the window. “It’s Child Protective Services!”

Just when I didn’t think things could get worse, they did. Somebody began to scream. The knocks at the front door intensified as a woman in the house let out a blood-curdling, bone-chilling death wail.

These 13 utterly unforgettable stories by 13 of the hottest authors to hit Hawai`i’s literary scene are sure to leave you with ‘chicken skin’ as they take you on a ride through the seamier side of Paradise.
Chinatown has always been good for a mystery. THE JOSS AT TABLE TWELVE is a traditional cozy. In THE CHINATOWN CONUNDRUM, a reporter gets the scoop on a bloodless corpse found in a back alley. In THE FACE by Greg Field, an off-duty HPD detective and a fourteen-year-old girl team up to investigate the murder of a homeless man beaten beyond recognition. A seemingly simple infidelity case soon turns deadly, in THE KAHALA CAPER.
THE MAN WITH THE BLACK FEET poses the question: What happens when a man is stripped of everything that makes him feel important—his career, his family, his health …? In POI DOG, a fraud examiner thinks it’s going to be a dreary day in Waikīkī, but appearances can be deceiving. LOVE SHACK questions the meaning of loyalty, the depth of love, and the seduction of greed. In ADRIFT ON KANEOHE BAY, a glorious day-sail takes a tack into a deadly enigma. In TOURISTS, islanders know no matter how romantic, you don’t swim at night. Mystery shows its humorous side in BAD HAIR DAY, when two pals take up the search for a missing Honda. GLORIA was the best. But what does that mean? Why did she die? In WAR, LOVE, FOOD, AND TRUST by Rose Mary Thompson, a woman works under cover to learn whether Honolulu restaurants are compliant with World War I conservation regulations. Psychological thriller FROSTED is the tale of a woman with an icy stare and a chilling secret.
MYSTERY IN PARADISE 13 Tales of Suspense will take you on a colorful trip around the islands, and show you a bit about Hawaiian culture, its people, and life in paradise. Enjoy!

The Man and the Voice Behind Phantom Lover

By A.J. Llewellyn

They say in Hollywood that your career is made by those you meet, not your qualifications, resume…whatever.

Some years ago, I befriended the charismatic actor Don Scribner. He was not only handsome, bright, funny and thoughtful, but oh, so talented, too. We used to talk boxing (we’re both fans) and after a stellar turn in the movie, The Cooler, Don penned a one-man show called Two Rooms in the Valley, which remains the most impressive tour de force I’ve ever seen.

I still laugh as he describes his first big movie, Slave Girls From Beyond Infinity…and cringe with him thinking about the terrible date he had with a woman who turned her nose up at his apartment…his two rooms in the valley.

Don writes like he talks. So descriptive. So real.

I was so taken by his self-deprecation and the emotion and humor in his performance, that I booked him to re-stage it for my local library. I’d known Don a long time but it was something else to see the way he prepared himself weeks in advance for this single performance.

The old ladies who relied on me to book authors for the Distinguished Speaker Series had been enthralled with the huge-name authors I’d been able to bring to the library. They were wonderfully supportive of bringing Don in with his show. I’d seen it and they trusted me when I said it was riveting. I hoped we’d draw a good crowd but none of us expected a beyond-capacity audience.

Our poor security guy was fending off latecomers for the entire ninety minutes Don told us the story of his life and career in Hollywood. He drew the biggest crowd we’d ever had. I was so happy for him!

When I wrote Phantom Lover and it was published, Don read it. He was very accepting of my choice to write M/M and very encouraging about my work. He said some beautiful things about my writing and the language…you know, the stuff authors long to hear.

Then he blew me away by offering to do the audio version of Phantom Lover. I was stunned.

Don did his usual impeccable preparation. He sat down with me in our favorite coffee shop and he asked me for exact pronunciation of all the Hawaiian words. He has a gorgeous voice and absolutely killed it in the recording of this sensual story.

Don is straight. I mention this because he didn’t balk at the full-on dialogue. When he finished recording the book, my brother put the chapters together, condensed and mixed it and I got some royalty-free music which he used at the beginning, between the chapters and at the end.

The final product was sensational. I gave it to my publisher at the time who put it on her website and Fictionwise. Then Fictionwise abandoned audio books and the audio book languished. Don asked me to give him a “character name” for his voice work.

And I did. We called him Donnie Don Don.

I finally found a great home for the audio book at Silver Publishing, with a fantastic new cover. I hope we have huge sales!

But I digress…

Don is finally allowing me to bring him out of the shadows and to identify him as THE VOICE!

Don Scribner is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood.  He’s having a huge surge work-wise and you can look forward to seeing him in the leading roles in the movies The Guide, Appleton, Newark County, and a bunch of other roles as well.

I hope we’ll also be seeing him in the movie version of his astonishing book, Who Killed Love, which has just been published.

It’s one of the finest books I’ve ever read. I’d say it’s a literary mystery with fantastic lines on every page.

I wish I’d written this book, but I didn’t.

To help my friend celebrate his huge achievement (he’s working on the sequel now) we’re offering  a special 20% discount on purchases of Who Killed Love. To sweeten the deal, if you purchase the book, I’ll send you a FREE audio copy of Phantom Lover.

What you need to know:

A synopsis for Who Killed Love:

Harlan “Harley” Saltz is a writer with a problem. He’s invited to a wedding. Weddings make Harley nervous. Especially when the bride is the woman he still loves…and she’s marrying another man.

Harley notices the details, the small moments that make up a minute, an hour, a single day. Losing Teri was his decision because, frankly, he couldn’t afford to keep her in the style in which they both feel she should be accustomed.

Life is full of ironies. She’s like the tax man, she gave and took. For example, she was the one who put the greeting card program on his trusty computer. He takes a long time to compose a proper wedding card for her. After all, what do you say to a woman who still has your heart but is walking down the aisle with some other guy?

And she took. Oh, yeah. She took. The love she gave to him…who killed it?
