Kevin Branigan thought he was moving to Austin, Texas, for a job. Instead, he got a life.

Kevin Branigan begins a new life in Austin, Texas, working as a bouncer at his brother’s bar. A teacher by trade, he’s had a hard time getting work and is still hurt over a catastrophic break-up. Doing something completely different seems like a great idea, and being close to his brother, Jack, and Jack’s husband, Tito, is another benefit to his changed circumstances.

Things are looking up until Tito intervenes in a drunken fight at the bar one night. Tito stops a patron from beating up his girlfriend, but it could be very bad if news gets out that Tito, a retired boxer, slugged the guy. Kevin takes the fall, and winds up being arrested.

Sentenced to community service in a gay church, Kevin begins to think that the signs are all bad. However, late one night at the bar, he’s seduced into a hot threesome with two of his co-workers. He finds himself drawn into this dangerous mix, as well as to a hunky undercover cop, Cruz Dixon. Unfortunately Cruz appears to have a boyfriend. Or does he? Can Kevin win over Cruz, who’s captured his heart and his mind? Can he really make a life for himself in the World Capital of Music? Or are his days as Austin’s newest bouncer numbered?

Keep reading to see just how fabulous CHRISTINE NOLFI really  is! I mean, she answered ALL my STUPID QUESTIONS!!!

Yeah, baby! It’s Tiki Time!

1. Hi Christine, what’s your favorite cocktail? I’ll have the cabana boys whip one up for you while I ask you some stupid, I mean ridiculous… no, no, I mean very important questions.
Dirty martini, Grey Goose, blue cheese olives. Yum!
2. I adore blue cheese olives! What was your favorite toy growing up and do you still have it?
My favorite toy has always been the crazy grey matter swimming around in my skull. I can’t recall a time when I wasn’t cooking up stories. In childhood, I convinced the neighborhood kids that fairies left pots of gold hidden around the street–we merely had to find them. I also convinced myself I could fly, a la Peter Pan, and nearly leapt from Bobby Cooper’s treehouse on more than one occasion. I also convinced Bobby he could do the same. He grew up to become a fighter pilot; I’m still convinced I can fly, and have managed not to break my legs.
3.  I believe you can fly, too Christine! Do you have any weird writerly rituals? Do you need to burn candles or sacrifice virgins or anything before you start?
Of course. The words won’t arrive unless I succumb to a high caloric feast, something like high-fat yogurt followed by the chocolate covered macadamia nuts my husband *thinks* he hides from me. This ritual is then followed by the afternoon ritual of working out at the gym, and wondering why so much of me jiggles when I run on the treadmill…
4. You’ve written two books about Lei Texeira now. And both are paranormals. Have you ever seen a ghost? Has she? Did either of you scream?
I’ve seen a ghost and been saved by an angel but, sadly, no one has invited me on a TV show to chat about it. The ghost appeared at the bottom of the stairwell while I was caring for my grandfather as he neared death. No screaming, but I did quicken my pace. The angel–unseen but certainly felt–clamped a hand on my shoulder as I was driving toward a green light. I slammed on the brakes as a truck barreled through the red light.

5. I think there is a book in this… Now, imagine you’re stuck on a deserted island after a three hour tour that goes awry. Name six people alive or dead that you’d like to be marooned with…and your fantasy castaway meal.

I’m marooned with Isaac Newton, Mahatma Ghandi, Shakespeare, my husband (for laughs), and authors Geraldine Brooks and Sue Monk Kidd. We keep the conversation flowing with lots of Starbucks, Francis Ford Coppola’s Sofia rose wine, lobster with drawn butter, grilled asparagus and red peppers, french bread and more lobster with drawn butter. Oh. And cheesecake for dessert.
The Shell Seeker SYNOPSIS:
In South Carolina, there’s more than magic in the air. Now policewoman Lei Texeira must solve the case of the Pirate Necklace. The famed emeralds, spirited in the 1700s from the pirate Blackbeard’s ship, have been snatched once again. This time, the bling was taken from Marie-Therese Belvedere, a woman whose cruelty is only topped by her arrogance. Lei doesn’t care for the icy socialite, but she feels an instant connection with the woman’s stepdaughter. An unlucky star has followed Sydney Belvedere her entire life. If the necklace isn’t found, she’ll lose a treasure more dear than the finest gem. Only the magic of Lei’s intuition stands between Sydney and unspeakable loss.
The Shell Keeper SYNOPSIS:
In South Carolina, magic is as plentiful as sweet tea. Thanks to her aunt’s unwanted generosity, policewoman Lei Texeira has embarked on a vacation—of the supernatural sort. She’s staying on the beach in a frothy mansion that resembles a baker’s confection. Pixie, a Southern belle with enough bling to open a shop on Rodeo Drive, manages the place. When Pixie reveals a local woman reputed to have psychic powers wants to meet Lei, the invitation is anything but welcome. What Lei discovers about the sorcery of belief, and the love promised to her future will begin to heal wounds she’s carried for far too long.

Anomalies by Vivien Dean http://www.amberquill.com/store/p/2242-Anomalies.aspx

On the planet of Kathtor, Midnight Creek is special. It houses a geo-spatial anomaly that crosses the distance between opposite sides of the planet with a single step. A hundred years ago, the warring Kimon used the anomaly to invade the peaceful Therlerians, only to be driven away by their advanced technology.

Now, a single man guards the point of entry. Warden Arie Vedebel is the best of his kind, a soldier in the Liberated Therler Federacy, determined to defend his people to the death. When an electrical storm sets the creek on fire, he races to extinguish it, only to discover a man in the midst of it—General Dennick Ginn of the Elds Regime, a highly decorated Kimon officer.

Arie’s orders are to kill on sight, but Dennick’s claims that’s he come through the anomaly to destroy it make him pause. As far as Arie knows, the man’s goal is impossible. Then again, he’d always been told his post was a precautionary one, that traveling through the anomaly was no longer viable.

Warily, Arie and Dennick form an alliance. While Arie strives to find the truth, the one fact he can’t dispute is that Dennick is not what he expects a Kimon to be. The two men have more in common than military training…and they just might have a future, too.

Keep reading to see just how fabulous JULIE GILBERT is! I mean, she answered ALL my STUPID QUESTIONS!!!

Yeah, baby! It’s Tiki Time!

1. What’s your favorite cocktail? I’ll have the cabana boys whip one up for you while I ask you some stupid questions. After one of their creations the questions won’t seem silly at all!

I don’t drink. This isn’t a moral, high-handedness thing. I physically can’t handle alcohol. Tried once and fainted. End of experimental drinking phase of life. I’ll have a root beer. That’s about as close to beer as I can get.

2. Wow. I think the cabana boys just pouted! They love mixing drinks… Anyway, what is the weirdest thing you ever Googled?

I got a little self-conscious Googling “How long does it take a gunshot wound to heal?” Hands down writing is the cause for the weirdest Google searches I’ve done. But this round, it’s typically been confined to fun stuff to do in Hawaii and where the various branches of Bank of Hawaii are located. Boring, I know, I’m sorry. I’m too normal. It’s a character flaw.

3. Hmm… Well let me ask, do you write naked?

Can’t say that ever crossed my mind. I suppose it could be a freeing way to express oneself, but I don’t generally have writer’s block issues that would require such drastic measures. Typically, I write in the basement, so if anything, I’m wearing more clothes while writing.

4. Your Lei Crime story focuses on Marcella Scott. What are her five favorite books of all time and do you think she gets the chance to read much?

You’ll have to ask Toby Neal for a more definitive answer, but I imagine Marcella being an eclectic reader. She probably doesn’t have much time for it, but I’m guessing there would be some non-fiction how-to’s, a few trashy romances, and a smattering of thrillers. If she goes for the occasional mystery, I’m thinking deep, psychological twisty ones over cozy. Unfortunately, I don’t see her gravitate too much to science fiction and fantasy, though there probably is a rare exception. She’s probably the happy ending sort of girl, but she’s not afraid to wade through some drama to get there. Given her job though, I don’t think she does too much curling up on the couch with tea and a good read. She’d rather be making stories than taking them in.

My speculation: (no particular order)

1. Pride, Prejudice, and Zombies by Seth Graham Smith and Jane Austen – there’s an exception to every rule. I think Marcella would enjoy the oddball nature of this book.

2. Outlaw Princess by Nancy Springer – Since I don’t think Marcella’s much of a reader these days, her favorites will gravitate toward being from childhood. She’d enjoy the girl-power, stick up for what you believe messages that permeate this series.

3. Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Mysteries – We know very early Marcella decides to become an FBI agent. The “always get the bad guys” nature of the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Mystery series would definitely appeal to her.

4. The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear – Hey, I did say she probably wasn’t much of a reader, but she probably has a few childhood favorites clinging to her soul.

5. Are You My Mother? – See reasoning for #4.

5. I love these answers! And now I have some new titles to explore! Okay, last question. You’re stuck on a deserted island after a three hour tour that goes awry. Name six people alive or dead that you’d like to be marooned with…and your fantasy castaway meal. Thanks!

Do they have to be real people? I mean I think MacGyver would be a great guy to have around in a crisis.

Assuming they have to be real, I’d choose Tricia Nolfi, Toby Neal, Janet Oakley, Mary Doyle, Corinne O’Flynn, and Russell Blake. If I’m gonna die on an island somewhere, I better go down being entertained. Seriously, writers and writer’s assistants would be great to be marooned with. They’ve got very creative, inventive, and often organized minds. Not sure about the wisdom of choosing murder mystery writers, but hey, they can probably branch out to use the creativity productively in non-murderous ways.

Fantasy meal, roasted pork. If we’ve got enough fuel to make a fire that can roast a pig, we can send up one heck of a smoke signal.

Lei Crime Series Defining Moments Series (Mystery/ Suspense):

Episode I: Never Again

The breakup was just the beginning …

When college junior Alana Adams catches her boyfriend passionately kissing another woman, she promptly dumps Nathan and turns to her best friend, Michael, for advice and emotional support.

At first, Nathan apologizes and showers Alana with gifts in an effort to win her back. He tries to get her to see they belong together, but when his efforts fail, he concludes the real problem in their relationship must be her best friend.

As Alana’s rejection further sinks in, Nathan realizes there’s only one solution to their problem: kill Michael Stevens.

Excerpt from Never Again

Off to his left, a car started. It didn’t sound particularly loud, but he’d just spent the day tinkering with cars. He knew one when he heard it. He was surprised to be the only one leaving at this hour. People should be rushing home to put the finishing touches on dinner.

Adjusting the grip on his gym bag, Michael checked around and stepped off the curb to head toward his car. The full parking lot testified to the gym’s popularity. It even boasted a nice mix of fancy and functional cars.

An engine revved.

The rumbling roar told him something was hurtling his way fast.

Pivoting like he was spinning around a basketball defender, Michael crouched low, then rose and tossed his bag at the oncoming car.

The car’s headlights blazed to life, blinding him.

He dove between two parked cars, just as the aggressive car swerved away from his bag.

The car squealed to a halt, hesitated, then barreled on its way.

Needs brake pads.

The diagnosis came automatically as questions filled Michael.

Who was that? What just happened? Was it deliberate? Should I tell somebody?

Technically, the only casualty was his gym bag and the dirty clothes inside. They lay smeared across two car-lengths of pavement, soaking wet and torn to shreds. More angry than shaken, Michael gathered the wreckage and stuffed it into the large garbage can next to the gym door. Too weary and annoyed to report anything, he climbed in his car and drove to a sporting goods store to replace the gym bag he had just sacrificed.

Episode II: Money Makes it Deadlier

Money can buy many things, but can it purchase a permanent solution to divorce?

Martin Cantrell would like to know the answer to that question. He has money, respect, and power, but he also has a monthly alimony payment that’s making him miserable. When a friend offers to deal with the “ex” problem for a fee, he can hardly say no. Time is of the essence. The life insurance policy on his ex-wife expires in less than two months.

Unaware of the plans set in motion, Special Agent Marcella Scott goes about her business as usual, only now, she finally has an excuse to dress up on the job. She’s been asked to go undercover to check out some banks. One of the branches just happens to be managed by Martin Cantrell’s ex-wife.

What’s an agent to do when a perfectly peaceful morning turns into a hostage-taking standoff?

Excerpt from Money Makes it Deadlier:

Her personal cell phone beeped from the center cup holder where she’d thrown it hours ago at the start of this hurry-up-and-wait exercise. Seeing that the caller ID said Mom, she grunted and took the last bobby pin out of her mouth to tell Rogers to let it go to voicemail.

Too late.

“Hello, Mrs. Scatalina,” Mattgreeted, ignoring a frustrated stare from Marcella. “Why yes it is a fine day here, ma’am. It usually is in Hawaii. No. She’s right here, but I’m afraid y’all might get cut off. We may have to move at a moment’s notice. All right, will do, ma’am. Here she is.”

Even as Marcella’s eyes widened in alarm, Matt triumphantly stabbed the button to place the call on speaker.

Her mother’s excitable voice filled the car. “’Cella! Why you no call? Your papa and I, we wait days to hear from our baby and no calls!”

“Hi, Ma,” Marcella said, trying to rub away a tension headache. She reached for the volume button since conversations with her mother tended toward the loud side. “I meant to call yesterday.”

And the day before. There just wasn’t much to say. And I didn’t—

“What you think more important than family?” The question held the warning signs of a high-strung Italian mama about to launch into a well-loved lecture.

Suppressing a sigh, Marcella weighed the options of protesting her innocence and settling in for the scolding. Whenever her mother’s accent thickened this much, she knew she was in for it.

“You have boyfriend? That only good reason a girl have to forget to call her mama.”

Matt’s face twisted as he tried to keep from laughing aloud.

“What? No!” Marcella sat up straighter, shocked into better posture. “Ma, I don’t want a boyfriend. I have a job, a very busy one. I don’t—”

“Tut. You must make time for such things, ’Cella! You late twenties, mi amore. Make time for a nice boy to sweep you off your feet and …”

Where is that blasted warrant?

“Mattie!”

The laugh lines disappeared from Matt’s face, and Marcella was pleased to note he too straightened in his seat.

“Yes, Mrs. Scatalina?”

“You must help my ’Cella. She needs a man! Hawaii beautiful place. Is not right her being alone there!”

“Oh, I don’t think Marcella needs any help from me, ma’am. It’s all I can do to keep the wrong sorts at bay around here.”

“Thanks for calling, Ma, but we’re working. I’ve got to go. Love you. Kiss Papa Gio for me.” Before her mother could respond, Marcella ended the call.

As blessed silence fell, Rogers blinked at her. “Did the warrant come through?”

“Not yet.” Marcella’s eyes dared him to question how she handled the conversation. “But it’ll be here any second. I can feel it.”

“Did you just lie to your ma?”

“Not exactly. We are working.”

Episode III: Revenge Makes it Sweeter (Coming Sept. 2015)

Revenge is a lot of work.

When the original plan for his ex-wife goes awry, Martin Cantrell turns his mind toward a sweeter revenge: stealing their daughter’s affections. But he’s not the only one plotting, and his enemies are better at keeping to the shadows.

Meanwhile, Special Agent Marcella Scott gets a late night summons to the hospital to speak with a gunshot victim. She knows to expect almost anything, yet he still surprises her.

“Agent, if I die, save the girl.”

The girl turns out to be Katelyn Cantrell. Marcella’s not the only one protecting her, and the other person has no problem killing to obtain their goals.

Can Marcella prevent an assassination and catch a killer?

Excerpt from Revenge Makes it Sweeter

Squaring her shoulders, Marcella stepped into the room and found herself staring at a stranger. That set her off balance a moment, but she didn’t have much time to waste. Taking out her badge and a digital recorder, she held them up so the man could see both.

“I’m Special Agent Marcella Scott, FBI. You asked to see me. May I record the conversation?”

“Yes.” The man’s croaked response was barely audible. Blood soaked bandages covered his chest.

Permission granted, Marcella engaged the recorder and stowed her ID badge in her purse.

“We don’t have much time, so tell me what you can. Start with who you are and why you asked to see me. Do I know you?”

“No.”

The recorder had decent pickup, but Marcella wanted to help it all she could. She held the recorder as close to his lips as she dared.

“My name is Max Nicholson. I’m a Fixer.” He paused like he expected her to ask about that. Or maybe he just needed to take a few labored breaths.

“Go on.” Marcella really wanted to know what a Fixer did, but that would have to wait. She guessed he had more important things to tell her than definitions.

“Fixers take care of rich people’s problems.” Max’s dark eyes grew stony with pain and anger. His next words almost made Marcella drop the recorder on him. “I was hired by Martin Cantrell to kill his wife.”

“Why are you telling me this?” Marcella whispered the question like speaking too loudly would break a spell.

“I’m dying.” He groaned weakly. “Taking … him … with me.”

“I see. Do you have any proof?” Marcella leaned even closer, eager for an answer. His recorded testimony would go far, but it was far from binding.

Max nodded but his eyes grew unfocused.

“Storage locker.Kuhio Beach Park.Key … in my truck.”

“Okay, Max. I’ll get them. Do I have your permission to enter your truck and storage locker?”

“Yes.”

“Time’s up, agent,” barked Dr. Davy.

Marcella moved to turn off the recorder but a sharp look from Max stopped her.

“Agent, if I die, save the girl.”

“What girl?”

Marcella’s question went unanswered. Max’s energy was completely spent, and Dr. Davy looked ready to perform surgery or commit murder if she was delayed much longer.

“I’ll be in the waiting room until I review my notes. I’ll leave my cell number with the front desk. And here’s my card.” Marcella placed her card on the end table next to Max’s head. “Call me if anything changes.”

She didn’t want to say “if he dies” but she had a bad feeling about Max’s chance of survival.

1. Hi Eden, what’s your favorite cocktail? I’ll have the cabana boys whip one up for you while I ask you some stupid, I mean irrelevant. no, no, I mean important questions.

Haha! Thanks AJ. I love stupid—I mean important questions! As for the cocktail, hmm … I’m not one for sweet drinks, but I do love a strong scotch, especially when served to me by a cabana boy. I take it neat, water on the side. Stick an umbrella in it if you like!  And AJ, this was an important question to start with. VERY important!

2. I thought so too! So, Eden, what was your favorite toy growing up and do you still have it?

I’ve always loved jigsaw puzzles and would compete with my mom and siblings to see who finished a 100-piece puzzle first. That love for puzzles translated to LEGO, and then to crossword puzzles and Scrabble. Today, I play online Scrabble with friends and strangers all over the world. I have about thirty games on the go right now. It’s a bit of an addiction.

3. I love scrabble. Game on? Now, on to an impertinent, er, important question. Do you write naked?

God no, I live in Canada!

Nine months out of the year we’re in a deep freeze, so that would mean freezing my girly bits – not fun! My body temperature tends toward the cool side so I always need heat. In the winter, I wear a scarf, sweater and a wool hat, and that’s INSIDE the house!

4. I so agree. Cold girly bits are so uncomfortable. What is your favorite beach in all the world? If you could take only one book to read what would it be (not your own, of course)?

Lombok in Indonesia. I had the beach all to myself when I was there. The white sand was like baby powder. The ocean was calm and I could walk out for miles before the water reached my waist.

ONE book? Wow … tough question. It would have to be a book of poetry by Bukowski. Poetry expands my mind and enhances my ability to visualize the world. It would help me create stories in my head while soaking in the sun and watching the waves.

5. I love your description of that sand. Like baby powder, huh? Now, imagine you’re stuck there, or any deserted island after a three hour tour that goes awry. Name six people alive or dead that you’d like to be marooned with…and your fantasy castaway meal.

AJ, your questions keep getting more difficult!

Firstly, my best friend Mae, whom I’ve known since we were six. We always said we’d live near each other until we died, so I’d better take her or she’ll be pissed! She’s also an excellent cook, renovator, and decorator—very helpful on a deserted island.

My husband, John, who is a designer, painter, and musician. He has an eye for beautiful things, which makes life worth living even when days are difficult.

Peter Frampton, great musician, fun disposition, married and divorced three times – I’m sure he has a lot of stories to tell.

The Beatles (I’ll use the collective and count them as one!) Love them, their catalogue of music, their humor.

Sigmund Freud, because I studied him when he was much more relevant, and I’m interested in the mind. He was a forward thinker for his time, and it’d be interesting to talk with him about the changes that have happened in modern psychology.

Lastly, Aristotle, the father of all philosophers. He’d keep everyone on their toes.

As for my meal — East Indian — butter chicken, saag paneer, basmati rice, kheer, lime jello, red wine.

Thanks for the fun interview, and the NOT so stupid questions, AJ!

Thank you, Eden! I love your wonderful choices for dinner companions. I love Peter Frampton too!!

SEAL of a Monk

SYNOPSIS:

The ancient jungles of Kauai provide the perfect setting for self-discovery.

Despite the terror she experienced on her last trip, Lainey Lee returns to Hawaii to manage a silent meditation course on the Coconut Coast. Twenty-five women are under her care for ten days in a beautiful and remote location. Lainey expects to find inner peace, but four days into the course, one of the meditators disappears without a trace.

Did the girl leave of her own free will, or was she lured away by a strange cult? Lainey is frantic to answer these questions. As her desperation grows, she finds help from an unexpected source—a retired Navy SEAL named Maximillian Scott.

Now, Lainey has two mysteries to solve: what happened to the missing girl and the case of her own heart. Can she ever trust a man again?

EXCERPT:

Day one in the woods.

Late afternoon.

Heavy footsteps and shouting faded behind her sometime ago, but she kept up the grueling pace. The forest fell silent except for the thrumming in her ears as her legs pounded the ground. Every time she tripped on vines or underbrush, she scrambled up and kept running. Her shoes sank into the damp earth, jagged edges where erosion had split the soil like decaying flesh. The terrain changed quickly and often. No time to adjust her speed. She dared not look behind her.

Distance offered safety.

Tenderness in her right ankle worried her, but the adrenaline pumping through her veins kept her going. Fear trumped logic that told her she had to stop.

Snapping twigs and shoving branches out of the way, her peripheral vision blurred while her surroundings flew by. She blinked back tears and her face stung. Several minutes later, her legs turned to stone pillars. Her lungs were on fire. On the verge of collapse, she slowed down but swerved abruptly to avoid running into a low-hanging branch.

A dry gasp forced out a sudden, sharp cough when she stopped. She clamped her hands over her mouth while the sound echoed like an explosion around her. A flurry of activity hit her senses. Her own heartbeat thumped in her head along with a cacophony above her. She glared up at an open patch of sky to see a flock of yellow birds funnel upward like a tornado. They chirped loudly in unison as if admonishing her for destroying their peace.

She struggled to regain her breath, rolled her aching shoulders to expand her lungs. Ahh … she forgot about the fifty-pound weight on her back. She released the hip belt and dropped the pack to the ground. Relief. While running, she considered unbuckling the sack and discarding it. Crazed as she was at the time, she couldn’t do it. It would’ve been suicide.

Squatted beside her bag, her almond-shaped eyes flittered back and forth for any movement nearby. Scampering sounds came from behind trees like kids playing hide-and-seek. Were they small animals? Or large ones? Every strange noise alerted her to danger, and there were so many she had never heard.

Crouched down, a different perspective met her view, all of it foreign to her—dense, tropical forest with no clear path, no posted signs. The boughs of conifers loomed over her like giant arms. Were they pines? She couldn’t be sure, never paid much attention to plant life in the city.

She was in deep trouble.

To check out this book, click the link:

http://www.amazon.com/JET-Nightbird-Kindle-Worlds-Novella-ebook/dp/B012P69SY0/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8

BUT post a comment and you’ll enter the draw to win a free kindle copy! Winner announced Friday!

1. Hi Toby, what’s your favorite cocktail? I’ll have the cabana boys whip one up for you while I ask you some stupid, I mean important questions.
It used to be the mai-tai, but I developed a sensitivity to pineapple juice, alas, so now it’s the mojito! I’m making do, ha ha!
2. I would cry without pineapple! What is your favorite swimwear? Do you favor bikinis, one-pieces or are you a secret skinny dipper?
I grew up hippie, so I’ve been known to frolic under waterfalls in my birthday suit! The rest of the time, I’m into function, not tanning, as I’m a freckly redhead, so I wear a swimmer’s tank suit. I love doing laps in the ocean!
3.  When you’re not doing laps what would be your favorite beach read? (not your own of course…)
Hmmm, that’s a tough one! I’m currently enjoying all the Lei Crime Kindle World novellas. They’re great beach reads!
4. If you could have any accent in the world, which one would you choose?
Ah, mais oui. le francais of course! What’s sexier than a French accent? Not much!
5. Oui, oui! You’re stuck on a deserted island after a three hour tour that goes awry. Name six people alive or dead that you’d like to be marooned with…and your fantasy castaway meal.
Oh my goodness. Well, this is actually a discussion my husband and I’ve had as we are Survivor (the TV show) fans. I’d actually take my husband. He’s incredibly handy. He’d build us a shelter, climb a coconut tree and get us nuts for juice and food, and then catch fish, make fires, and give me midnight kisses too. He cooks up a mean lobster and fish meal right in the sand, seasoning with salt and limu…That’s my fantasy meal! I scored when I nabbed him thirty years ago!
After that, I’d have to be very picky because as a writer, I’m not actually that social. I mean, I can do it, for short bursts, but I’d hope on our island, we’d have room for everyone to have their own huts and just meet for meals. So then, I’d have my good friend Holly and her husband for intellectual company. She writes women’s fiction and he’s a robotics engineer. He could develop a water system for us run by wind power or something, and Holly and I could talk books.
I’d really also like essayist Ellen Meloy, who’s deceased now. She writes about nature and I’d like to study with her, perhaps write about our desert island and what we see and compare notes. Then, Ray Bradbury because he seems like he’s a riot and what a wonderfully divergent thinker. And in the evenings, I’d have Steven King creep us out around the fire with scary stories.
I love all of these authors. And your answers. Thanks for your time, Toby!

CopAndCon

When a cop and a newly released convict cross paths, few cons can expect anything but a cold shoulder and mistrust. Struggling back to the home he knows no longer exists, Ike Hernandez meets a cop who seems to be different. He isn’t sure he can believe the kindness he receives will continue. Still, he wants to learn to trust again and regain his lost self-respect.

Perry Parker became a law enforcement officer because he wanted to help people. He’d watched hardship trickle down to crush the youngest and weakest. He found there was not a lot he could do, but now and then he discovered someone he could help. Would the lost man with the little dog that he picked up one bitter cold and stormy night be one of them?

Pursuing tales about a new drug dealer in his county, Perry starts to doubt the man he’s befriended, but he still feels Ike is a decent person. When the real dealers seek to take advantage of the convict’s past, it takes Perry and his unofficial canine partner and the little stray Ike had adopted to save the day. TIKI TIME! AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: SCOTT BURY – WIN A FREE KINDLE EBOOK!

torn

Aloha Gang! Today we’re going to meet the awesome SCOTT BURY, author of TORN ROOTS, a new LEI CRIME WORLD NOVELLA. We have a juicy new excerpt never posted anywhere and he’s on the hot seat about to be grilled with some probing questions! To check out this book, click the link:

here: http://www.amazon.com/Lei-Crime-Kindle-Worlds-Novella-ebook/dp/B012PK5HJ6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1438889026&sr=8-1&keywords=scott+bury

BUT post a comment and you’ll enter the draw to win a free kindle copy! Winner announced Sunday!

 1. Hi Scott, what’s your favorite cocktail? I’ll have the cabana boys whip one up for you while I ask some really intrusive…er, I mean informative questions.
That’s hard to say. I’m partial to vodka and tonic, but occasionally I like spiced rum and ginger ale. Have the boys make one of each. Light on the ice.

2. Will do! What is your favorite swimwear? Are you a Speedo guy?
I’ve never felt comfortable in a Speedo. I like best the kind of trunks that come about half-way down the thigh. I know that, as a dad, I should wear knee-length trunks, but I find they slow me down in the water too much.

3. I’ll just pretend you’re wearing a Speedo then! Are you a sun-worshipper? Do you tan, burn, or do you prefer a fake bake or none at all?
Definitely not a sun worshipper. As a descendant of people from northern climes and one born and bred in the wilderness of Manitoba, I have sun-averse skin. I burn like crazy. While I do like to lie on a beach to write (what’s taking so long with those drinks? Interviewing is thirsty work), I need lots of sunscreen, a hat, an umbrella or a tree for shade and lots of hydration. Finlandia is my favorite brand of hydration, by the way.

4. Finlandia, huh? I’ll check it out! What’s your favorite beach in all the world?
Umm… that’s a tall order. I haven’t been to all of them, yet. I guess one that’s warm, has no other people on it but still has an unlimited supply of Finlandia, tonic and ice. Do you know where that is?

5. Is that a trick question? The answer is somewhere in Hawaii! Now, imagine you’re stuck on a deserted island after a three hour tour that goes awry. Name six people alive or dead that you’d like to be marooned with…and your fantasy castaway meal.
Well, dead people would start to smell bad after a while. So I’ll take six living people.
1: my wife, Roxanne, of course.
2: Nigella Lawson – easy on the eyes, and it would be good to have a second person along who can cook.
3. Bruce Springsteen, with guitar, for tunes.
4. Chuck Pahlaniuk to talk about writing.
5. Toby Neal to talk about writing, too, and also another fair-skinned person who obviously has figured out how to live on a tropical island. Of course, she’ll probably be mad that I marooned her on this island with me.
6.  Someone who knows how to distill vodka from whatever grows on this island.

As for the meal: fresh-caught fish roasted over an open fire, with local veggies and spices, and a flinty chablis. For dessert, local fruit with dark chocolate and black coffee.

Ah, here are the drinks. To literature!

Great answers Scott. I want to be marooned with you! And now for that excerpt and some links!

Torn Roots: Excerpt

The Activist

Rowan paused her tirade to let the members behind her take up a chant. “Maui shores for Maui! We don’t want offshore cash. Maui shores for Maui! We don’t need offshore land-grabs.”

A good crowd had gathered. In addition to the stymied construction crew, there were cops, a few locals, the corporate owners, of course, and media. Local TV, newspapers, radio station. Good work, Rowan, she thought.

Her eyes scanned back and forth, and then she spotted someone who made her heart stop for a second. What the hell was Sam Boyko doing at her protest? But there he was: long and lanky, curly dark hair, wide shoulders… “Crap,” she muttered. Sam was the last person she wanted to think about today.

A siren wailed once and two police SUVs drove onto the sight, lights flashing as they threaded their way between the cars and construction vehicles. Four uniformed officers, two men and two women, climbed out. Excellent, Rowan thought. This will ensure we get into the press.

One cop stepped between Rowan and the onlookers. “This is an unlicensed, illegal protest,” he announced. “I’ll give you all two minutes to clear off this property, and then I’ll arrest anyone who’s on this construction site without authorization.”

The Asian man in the gray suit stepped up to Rowan, offering a business card. “Ms. Fields, Enterprise Shore LLC understands your group’s concern. I assure you, we have done a thorough environmental assessment and our construction plans and methods will have the least possible impact on the fragile ecosystems of the shoreline as well as the forest.” He spoke flawless, carefully learned English.

Rowan swept the business card out of the man’s hand and threw it on the ground, her hair swirling around her shoulders the way she had hoped it would. “I’ve read all Enterprise Shore’s propaganda. None of us has time for your corporation’s lies, and neither does the environment.”

Then the construction manager, that creep, Tyler Lopes stepped forward and picked the business card off the ground. “Come on, Rowan, nobody’s hurting the environment here. Take Mr. Liu’s card. We’ll give you all the grand tour of the marina, the housing project, everything.” When Rowan did not take the card, he stepped closer. Rowan wanted to hit him, but she held herself still in front of the TV cameras. She couldn’t believe her eyes when Tyler slipped the card into her shirt pocket, fingers almost brushing her breast.

“I told you to stay away from me, Lopes,” she growled.
