I’ve just returned from a 10-day working trip to Waikiki and am completing work on Luau Feet, the third book in the Wizard series. Book 2 – Peridot Dreams will be reissued soon.

I love these books and hope you do too!

A Wizard in Waikiki – Synopsis

Summoned from the past, Konu rises naked from the sea to reclaim his power for the freedom to live—and love. If the forces of evil don’t get to him first!

On a hot day in Waikiki, beachgoers are stunned when a tall, handsome man rises from the ocean. Striding naked to a small, ringed enclosure containing four huge stones most tourists never even notice, he becomes visibly upset. These are Wizard Stones, positioned between the beach and the foot traffic on Kalakaua Avenue. Konu, the naked man, is agitated by a young Asian girl draping her beach towel over the stones. He’s come a long way, from Tahiti, and is one of the ancient wizards whose power was infused into these sacred stones four hundred years ago.

With the invisible battle between good and evil raging, Konu has been dispatched to help balance the power. Landing in modern-day Waikiki, he’s stunned by the changes – and to find he is alone. A cop tries to arrest him for indecent exposure but the young girl’s grandfather – who thinks Konu’s a homeless lunatic offers him refuge. Will the ancient forces of evil beat this wizard in Waikiki? Or can Konu find his power again, and perhaps…even love?

Publisher’s note: This book was previously published. It has been edited and re-released with Ai Press.

We  have the amazing and gorgeous author K-lee Klein here for this week’s Tiki Time Author Spotlight. Yes! She took the time out of her busy schedule to thoughtfully answer some totally dumbass questions. Is she cool, or what??

1. Hi K-lee, what’s your favorite cocktail? I’ll have the cabana boys whip one up for you while I ask you some stupid, I mean important questions.

Hi-ya, AJ. Thanks very much for inviting me. Stares a half-nekkid cabana boys. A cocktail would be lovely. How about a Rootbeer Paralyzer? I’m Canadian so I’m not sure you’ll have one of those on hand. It’s a regular Paralyzer but with Rootbeer Schnapps instead of vodka or tequila. Tastes like a Rootbeer float. Yummy.

2. It sounds divine, K-lee! I believe I’ll have one too! My questions might get a but stupider though… What is your favorite swimwear? Do you favor bikinis, one-pieces or are you a secret skinny dipper?

Ha! How about one of those old-fashioned one-pieces that cover you from head-to-toe? I love the water but in this phase of my life I’m not a fan of bathing suits. Of course, if it’s dark, I’m all for doing dipping the skinny. 🙂

3.  I knew it! I knew it! You’re a naughty girl!! What would be your favorite beach read? (not your own of course…)

Hmmm. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. That’s one of the only male/female books I still read over and over. Mmmm…Jamie Fraser. In the m/m genre, it would be the Home series by TA Chase or Bareback by Chris Owen – both faves.

4. If you could have any accent in the world, which one would you choose?

I love accents. I think I’d go Irish or Scottish. I can’t choose between the two because they’re both awesome.

5. I can hear you rocking a Scottish accent! So, imagine you’re stuck on a deserted island after a three-hour tour that goes awry. Name six people alive or dead that you’d like to be marooned with…and your fantasy castaway meal.

My dad died when I was 6 months old so I’d love to get to know him. My other answers are a little more scandalous—Sebastian Stan, Chris Evans, Oscar Wilde, Christian Kane, and can I cheat and lump my three kids into one answer? You don’t want to deprive them of meeting their grandpa, right? 🙂

No! I couldn’t do that…and hey…I have tears in my eyes. Who’s been cutting onions??

My fantasy castaway meal would be sushi—easy to find by the ocean, right—with paella, and prime rib, with jalepenos on the side and strawberry cheesecake for dessert. Sounds like a very odd combo but delish! Lol.

K-lee, it sounds delish to me. Thanks for stopping by and for being such a good sport. I love your choice of cocktail by the way. I’m sipping my third and I can’t feel a thing. I am in bliss!

Blurb

Loveland, Colorado is a special place all year around, a community of creativity and art, with scenic views and majestic mountains. But the town really shines once a year, on Valentine’s Day.

Lucky Roberts has lived in Loveland his whole life. He has good friends, strong family support, and is all about keeping his community fun and alive. The only thing Lucky has been “unlucky” with is love. But rather than avoiding February fourteenth in his hometown, he throws himself into helping others deliver their messages of love.

Enter Jack Canon. Jack moved to Loveland for a fresh start, in both his personal and professional lives. After a tough year, he’s finally hoping to just blend in, maybe carve a little niche for himself that his parents would have been proud of. What he didn’t expect was a pseudo-lumberjack with a killer body and shy smile to turn his world upside down – and he sure didn’t expect to like it so much.

When Lucky meets Jack, he feels like a thirteen year-old with his first crush. He’s clumsy, stammering, and the first greeting out of his mouth is a less than articulate, “Wow!” Words like adorable and manbun suddenly become part of his vocabulary as he discovers a deep, hidden need to romance the hell out of Jack.

And what better way to do that than during the most romantic season in the City of Love?

Excerpt

Lucky hadn’t known what to expect.

And that was a bold-faced lie.

Okay, so he might’ve asked around about the new teacher in their community, specifically the hot new kindergarten teacher he’d been hearing about, and also might have caught partial glimpses of the guy here and there. But after he’d stomped the excessive snow from his boots, he still hadn’t expected an angel with an adorable ponytail to open the door to room one-O-five at Loveland Elementary.

Maybe he hadn’t been lying after all.

Wide brown eyes greeted him and Lucky was immediately smitten. “Wow. Um, hey. I’m…yeah, hi. I’m Lucky…Roberts. I’m here for the…uh…” He stammered across consonants and vowels that felt garbled and heavy against his tongue. Then, because he was who he was, he followed the nonsense with a single syllable of amazingly stupid. “Wow.”

Embarrassment rocketed through him as he slid his hand over his head, tugging off his knit hat. He rubbed nervously at his short hair while heat tingled from his neck to his cheeks.

“Jack Canon.”

The guy came across as cool as a cucumber. His only tell was an almost-contained smirk as he held out his arm.

Lucky shifted all his ridiculous plastic bags to his left hand and shook Jack’s right with a little too much force. He was aware that his palm was slick and clammy despite the chill of an early January morning.

Jack didn’t appear to notice that either. He really was a goddamn angel in black jeans and a wine-colored dress shirt that brought a shining brilliance to his pale skin and dark hair. Jesus, man. Say something!

“Lucky,” he finally managed. A billowing laugh he couldn’t stifle in time slipped past his lips.

He quickly shushed himself because, Jesus Murphy, he was in a school during damn school hours. This wasn’t his first rodeo. He’d been here before, volunteered all the time, even at this same school. He’d also seen pretty faces before. He could do this.

He cleared his throat, shoving his sweaty hand deep into the front pocket of his jeans, then ducked his chin to his chest. Once he’d also pulled his head out of his ass, he settled his gaze back on the most beautiful man he’d ever seen. “I mean that’s my name, not that I’m lucky or whatever…I already told you that, right? Jesus, I’m sorry.”

“Hey, no worries—” Full lips curved into an affectionate smile. At least Jack didn’t seem inclined to kick Lucky off the premises for breaking the rules of stupid, even the ones mastered by five-year-olds.

“Shit, I swore—and I just did it again. In school. Maybe I should go out and come back in again?”

Jack chuckled, one side of his smile tipping higher than the other. It was adorable.

“It’s all good. The kids have been excited all morning.”

“I’m not late, am I? I’m usually quite punctual. Or at least, that’s what my mom says. She’s obviously a little biased on the subject, of course, but…I don’t usually talk so much.” Keep babbling, Lucky, because that will make everything so much better. 🙂

“Why don’t you just come in instead?”

“That’s a lie. I actually never shut up. My mom says that, too.”

Once he’d ultimately managed to zip his lips, Lucky let Jack shuffle him inside the cloakroom of the classroom. It smelled like warm cookies and white glue, though he wasn’t entirely sure that wasn’t just Jack, or even Lucky’s own imagination. They were two of his favorite smells, after all, or had been at one time. He was suddenly aware of high-pitched voices drifting from the main part of the classroom.

“Mr. Jack! Mr. Jack! Is Lucky here yet?”

“His mom told my mom he was coming today.”

“Your mom doesn’t know everything, Daniel.”

“Yeah, she does. Your mom doesn’t know nothing, Allison.”

“Well, your mom is a poopy-head.”

“Your mom eats poopies—”

Bio

K-lee Klein has lived in one part of Western Canada or another for her entire life. She’s a doting mother of three now-grown kids, and has had characters and plots running around her head for as long as she can remember. In an attempt to avoid major writer’s block, she keeps the image of muse on her leg so he can’t run off too far, unfortunately it doesn’t work all the time. K-lee’s days consist of planning her next tattoo design for her growing collection, having a lot of baths since her muse loves the water, and fighting off an abundance of fabulous gay men, large and small who continually bounce off the walls of her skull, competing for their turns to tell their stories.

Among her favourite sub-genres to read and write are rock stars, cowboys, shifters, friends-to-lovers, and opposites-attract relationships. But to be honest, she’s open to almost anything if it involves messing around in the heads of her characters. She’s also big on series—because she has a hard time letting her characters go—and is usually working on a handful of stories in various stages of completion all at the same time.

TIKI TIME! AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT: JULIE C. GILBERT – WIN A FREE KINDLE EBOOK!

revenge

Aloha Gang!

We have Julie C. Gilbert, a returning author here for this week’s Tiki Time Author Spotlight. She is one super-cool, super-brave wahine!!

Aloooooha!

Her new book, Revenge Makes it Sweeter, book 3  in the continuing “Defining Moments” series is (Part of best-selling author Toby Neal’s Kindle Worlds Lei Crime series) is out and burnin’ up Amazon! You can check it out here: http://www.amazon.com/Lei-Crime-Revenge-Sweeter-Defining-ebook/dp/B015NH2O4E/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8

Or you can post a comment here to enter the draw to win a copy of it!

And now here she is answering more crazy questions.

1.  Hi Julie, you are back for a second round of interviews you brave soul! Is root beer still your drink of choice since I remember you said you don’t drink alcohol. I’ll have the cabana boys pour one for you while I ask you some really stupid questions.

A root beer will be fine. Thank you. Yes, ma’am. That is correct. I generally try to avoid things that make me faint, and I’m not overly fond of the taste of regular beer either. Ha, you spoil me. Every time I come, I get treated like royalty. Must be nice to have cabana boys working for ya.

2. It really is. I get jealous of myself sometimes! Now… If you had a third eye, where would you put it?

I think that would be weird, but if I had such a choice, I’d like it to be on my left hand. That way, I could get a better perspective and use it like a periscope. The common answer might be the back of the head, but that would confine the eye to things behind you and on a certain level. A hand has more freedom of movement.

3.  I’m keeping an eye on your left hand! If you could have any accent in the world which one would you choose?

British. Definitely, British. I know those can vary too, but a light, refined British accent would be awesome. Some of my characters have that accent, so sometimes I think that way, but it’s not the same as being able to use it for real.

4. You are now working on a Christmas book for the Lei Crime series. Where is this story set and does it feature Marcella again?

Christmas Makes it Chaos is my 4th Lei Crime Kindle World story. After Never Again, which features a young Michael Stevens, I moved on to working with Marcella Scott, and I haven’t looked back. Yes, Marcella’s the star once again. This adventure takes her up my way to Pennsylvania. For reference, that’s the state left of where I live in New Jersey.

This time around, Marcella starts out intending to go to an anti-terrorism conference and ends up in the middle of a real terrorist plot. It’s not finished yet, so I couldn’t even tell you how she does it, but we all know she’s gonna whoop some bad guy behind and save the day.

5. Since I already asked you last time about a desert island meal I’ll round out things by asking you this: Where is your favorite place to go on a weekday afternoon when you have no plans or obligations?

If the weather is nice and warm, I enjoy going down to Coldstone (an ice cream joint) or Starbucks and getting a strawberry mango smoothie or an iced coffee, respectively. Both are within walking distance of my apartment. There I shall soak up the sunshine and fresh air and catch up on my sorely neglected reading. Otherwise, I’m content to write in my room with a cup of tea. That’s enjoyable too.

Thanks again for chatting with me. I look forward to catching up on my Lei Crime KW readings, including your works. Bye.

Thank YOU Julie!!

Aloooooooha!

But today we are gonna ask Janet some incredibly stupid questions about the writing life and COCONUT ISLAND, which is one da kine, really amazing addition to the Lei Crime World created by the talented superstar author Toby Neal!

1. Hi Janet, what’s your favorite cocktail? I’ll have the cabana boys whip one up for you while I ask you some stupid, I mean irrelevant. no, no, I mean important questions.

It’s funny, but I’m such a cheap date that I don’t drink many cocktails – too much alcohol, but lately my favorite drink to have at a bar is a really good ginger beer, non-alcoholic, with a nice kick.

 2. What was your favorite toy growing up and do you still have it?

I come from a family that saves things so I was taught to care for my toys. I loved horses and dolls. I still have my collection of plastic horses that were inspired by the Black Stallion books and Ginny dolls. My Ginny dolls came with  a wonderful kitchen set with working sink, a refrigerator which has a light that goes on when you open the door and a stove (non-working), dresser, dining room table and armoire.

3.  I adored Ginny dolls too! Now, if you had a third eye, where would you put it?

Having a third on the back of my head would be disorienting. I think right in the middle of my forehead would work. There I could read things far away and tiny scribbles up close. Some sort of light source included.

4. You write historical tales. What is your favorite era in history? If you could go back in time, who and where would you want to be?

I am very interested in the Civil War period probably due to my great-grandfather. W.F. Osborn who was a surgeon in the Union Army at Gettysburg. It’s a very interesting time from the 1850s through the 1860s almost everywhere in the USA—including Hawaii. But I also love the Great Depression and WW II. The period right after that lends to some great storytelling and you see more post-war showing up on TV as lives and technology changed.

But in all honesty, I’d love to go back to my great-grandmother’s time when she came West in the 1862 (she was 12) and homesteaded all over the territories. She finally ended up in Idaho. Civil War and post Civil War lives of a wonderful woman, my mother’s grandmother, all the way into the 1950s at 101.

5. Wow. You are so interesting! Wish I could ask you some intelligent questions instead of foolish ones…anyway… You’re stuck on a deserted island after a three hour tour that goes awry. Name six people alive or dead that you’d like to be marooned with…and your fantasy castaway meal.

My great-grandfather Marquis de Lafayette March, a Civil War vet who homesteaded in every territory in the West; my late husband Rolf, a Vietnam vet and all round handyman, baker, and hunter; my mom for musical entertainment, and some means to get my critique partners with me so we can continue our readings.

The best castaway meal would be a pig with special sauce in imu pit, pineapple and other tropical fruits, rice, wine coolers and key lime pie. I supposed I could change my mind, but this will do.

COCONUT ISLAND Synopsis:

Memories are dangerous.

 EXCERPT:

…Kord was giving me so many mixed signals, or so I thought. Sometimes he reached out to me, then pulled his hand away. I was certain he was staring at my mouth in a hungry way. I sure as hell wanted him to kiss me. He smiled at me a lot. Maybe he was being kind, but I felt certain we were on a date. When he took me to his own home, I didn’t think I was wrong. His beach cottage sat right on the reef, and I was stunned by his uninterrupted view of the ocean.

Kord’s life seemed to be straight out of my childhood. Everything on the walls and sideboards was found art. He’d discovered gigantic shells, sea glass balls, bleached pieces of driftwood that almost looked like antlers. He’d even made a hammock out of an old fisherman’s net.

He showed me his home office, which took up most of the space. He pointed to the garage. “That’s where I build stuff.”

I had a sense he didn’t bring many people here. I almost felt glad I didn’t see any chick stuff. His home spoke of a solitary existence.

“Take a seat.” He pointed outside. I swung in one of the aged rocking chairs on the lanai as he brought me a beer. Longboard. My favorite.

“You had a recent breakup, too,” I said. “Isn’t that what you told Marcella?”

“Sure. It never works out for me with women.” He scowled.

“Why’s that? You’re a great guy. Handsome, hard-working—”

“Thanks. That’s part of the problem. I love to work.”

The words swayed between us like a coconut palm. “I have a hard time with women because…because…”

He didn’t finish the sentence. He didn’t want me to know he was bi. I sensed he didn’t want to give me ideas. It was okay. I didn’t need any. I was too busy licking my own wounds and couldn’t have handled any confusion.

When he dropped me home and kissed me on the lips, I felt my spirit and my body reacting.

“Have a great night,” he said, then watched as I let myself inside Dad’s house.

As I closed and locked the door behind me, I felt something shifting. I couldn’t explain it as I leaned with my back against the blue stained-glass mermaid and felt her coolness seep into my hot skin.

Aaaahhh…something had changed. Something good. I touched my lips. We’d had a great date. No, not a date. He was being kind.

So why did he kiss me?

We’d had a swell time. A gentle time. I hadn’t had such a sweet evening with a man in a very long time. When I’d cleaned my teeth, I fell into bed. I could almost feel his dark hair on my face, his lips on mine. I tasted salty tears. Yeah…something was changing. I didn’t know what.

I dreamed of fishermen’s nets, mad laughter, and mud.

At around three o’clock in the morning, I awoke from a strange dream.

No. They were not coming back. I wouldn’t allow them to come back. Not the dreams. Not those ones. I closed my ears to the voices whispering…

Remember…remember…

I worked very hard to forget. To think of nothing but the soft press of Kord’s lips, wishing for more. So much more…
